LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Illustrating and Solving Quadratic Equations

Background Information for Learners

This material will help you illustrate quadratic equations and
solve them using the following methods:
 Extracting Square Roots
 Factoring
 Completing the Square
 Quadratic Formula
Formal Definition:

A quadratic equation in one variable is a mathematical

sentence of degree 2 that can be written in the standard form
a x +bx+ c=0 ,where a , b , and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0.
2

In the said equation, a x 2 is the quadratic term, bx is the

linear term, and c is the constant term.
Example:
3 x +7 x−8=0 is a quadratic equation,
2

where a=3 , b=7 , and c=−8.

Solving Quadratic Equations:

 BY EXTRACTING SQUARE ROOTS

Solve x 2−9=0 by extracting square roots.

quadratic equation are 6, 5, and −4,
respectively.
Substitute these values to the quadratic
formula.
