QUESTION 1

From the experiment below, please explain what you can observed during the experiment,
how was the compound formed and what were the equations involved in the formation of the
compound.

a. Magnesium oxide (10M)

(Proton number: Mg-12, O-8)
(Relative atomic mass: Mg-24, O-16)

1. A sandpaper is used to clean the magnesium ribbon, which is then rolled into a coil
and placed in a crucible
2. The crucible is heated strongly
3. The magnesium ribbon burns with a bright flame to form a white ash.

a. Sodium chloride (10M)

(Proton number: Na-11, Cl-17)
(Relative atomic mass: Na-23, Cl-35.5)

1. A small piece of sodium is cut and a pair of forceps is used to place it in to a scoop
2. The sodium is gently heated until it starts to burn. Then, it is plunged into the gas jar
containing chlorine
3. The sodium burns with a bright yellow flame and forms a white powdery substance.
