Introduction
The goal of our research was to comprehend the mentality and how grade 12
abm student behave on their chosen strand. It’s true that many students who
chosen abm strand wanted to accomplish their goals and dreams, some wish
for a better career or simply wants to get a high paying job in the future. Those
are different reasons but a valid one, perfect for students who has motivation
and determination to finish this strand. On the other hand, some students had
only chosen this strand out of whim. Perhaps, because of friends, family,
suggestions of others or simply because they felt that they don’t have any
choice beside this strand. These reasons tends to lead on bad study habits;
either by losing interest on the subjects entirely, losing both their motivation
and determination or simply acting nonchalantly on their studies causing drop
outs or simply failing the school year which can be considered as a waste of
time as student who spent almost 12 years if not even more simply to get this
far to simply give up or fail just because of a single wrong decision they made.
Some manage to keep up with the subjects and was at least determined to not
waste the time they spent getting this far on their academic strands. But their
mentally might felt exhausted by simply keeping up with subjects that they
don’t have interest and such mentally was reflected on their very actions.
Possibly, by doing the bare minimum amount of work on their academic
subjects or simply not doing it entirely, we are hoping to understand and
possibly give a concrete conclusion on how to avoid such bad mentality and
behavior. We are also hoping to understand other possible problems such as
depression and anxiety as we are aware that abm strand can be quite
challenging and even stress. Inducing this very reason could lead to multiple
case of depression or even anxiety, especially with our current situation with
the global pandemic. In addition to that, we also can’t ignore other factors like
personal problems of students that could impact their mentality or behavior
like financial problems or family problems. Thus, we are hoping that our
research could shed some light on how students could be affected by many
factors, not only by academic hardship.

Background of the study

According to studies, academic performance of Accountancy, Business

and Management strand has been linked to a variety of social-emotional
factors, including self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, and
responsible decision-making. These factors have an impact on how a student
behaves and acts. Depending on how individuals associate to these elements,

2
their knowledge and skills were also affected. Numerous issues have been
raised in studies on students' social and emotional readiness. According to
Pittman's (2017) study, a more balanced and broader environment will result
from students' social and moral development.
For instance, the introduction of K–12 programs in the Philippines
promised better college readiness for the students. According to Memorandum
Order 20 of the Commission on Higher Education from 2013, high school
pupils are supposed to be aware of the problems that local, national, and
international populations face. In particular, the Accountancy, Business and
Management degree demands that students be able to communicate clearly,
understand business opportunities and difficulties, make wise choices, and
cultivate a constructive ethical perspective on regional and international
business competitors.

One of the academic tracks offered by the K–12 curriculum that tries to
educate students for their desired careers is Accountancy, Business, and
Management (ABM). To prepare students for the business world, the
Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) strand emphasizes business
and financial topics. It focuses on managing finances, businesses,
corporations, and everything else that must be accounted for. In addition to
that, it aims to provide students the fundamental abilities they need to succeed
in their future occupations and businesses. However, it seems that the
majority of students in the Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM)
strand are having difficulties, which affects their mental health.

Researchers found that the majority of Grade 12 Accountancy, Business,

and Management (ABM) students showed decreased attentiveness and self-
assurance in their behavior toward accounting class. Prior to this
environment's advancement and transformation, students used to concentrate
on their education as a way to emphasize their future, but their attitudes have
also undergone a significant change.

In accordance with the researcher Carol Dweck (2006), the attitude and
belief that you can't learn something is a mindset component that we can
change. When it comes to our mentality, People learn to adopt one of two
predicted patterns: a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. These fundamental
beliefs are learned, and we can change people who believe that their
intelligence can be developed or increased, as well as those who hold a variety
of other positive attitudes. They valued learning as a goal because they believed
that their abilities could be improved, even if it required diligence or initial
mistakes.

Rationale of the study

3
This study aims to provide insight into a student's attitude and behavior
toward business, which may influence their future business plans. We'd like to
learn about the attitudes and mindsets of Accountancy, Business and
Management students toward business, particularly those studying business
management. Therefore, the study's findings can be used as a source of
information for the school's curriculum developer to create a curriculum and
activities that can change and improve students' attitudes and behaviors
toward business. It may aid in the improvement of teachers' Accountancy,
Business and Management-related teaching strategies.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the mentality and behavior of senior high school
students who chose ABM as their strand.
Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:
1. What is the level of effectiveness of information, education, and
communication in the awareness of students considering the following
variables?
2. What are the advantages of being Grade 12 ABM students?
3. What are the difficulties of being Grade 12 ABM students?
4. What are the factors that influences them in choosing ABM strand?
5. What are the different strategies that students used in understanding the
fundamentals of ABM?
6. How did the Grade 12 ABM students overcome those challenges they
encountered?

Theoretical Framework
This study will be guided by the following theories: Mindset theory and
Behavior theory. Mindset Theory. Mindset, the new psychology of success of a
study yet to be proven by Carol Dweck presented in her book released in 2006
suggest that a person with fixed mindset believes that their basic abilities, their
intelligence and talents, are just fixed traits. They have a certain amount and
that’s that, and then their goal becomes to look smart all the time and never
look dumb. While who have a growth mindset understand that their talents
and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence.
They don’t necessarily think everyone’s the same or anyone can be Einstein,
but they believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it. Behavior theory.

4
Behavioral psychology, or behaviorism is a theory that suggest that
environment shapes a human behavior.
Both theory suggest that mindset and behavior can determine the success
of a person, a person with a good mindset and good behavior will most likely be
favored more by people and will get more opportunities than people lacking one
of those traits it also suggest that even if a person has a bad behavior he or she
can still fix his or her behavior by simply getting a better environment and
mindset comes in this scenario too because a person that doesn't want to
improve wouldn't improve, both can be linked to each other and depending
whether both traits exist on a person can determine he's or her success.

Conceptual Framework
This research will conduct a set of questions on survey to focus group in
which it includes a limited number of respondents. It will serve as a basis to
the researcher to know what are the areas that need to be observed and
improve. The focus group is from the other section under the ABM strand in
ICCT-Colleges. This study was made to show the mentality and behavior of
senior high school students towards their chosen strand. Even though it was
given on a limited time, students were capable of answering the questions in
google forms that we made. The survey was sent through various ways
including personal message and emails, as well as from different Facebook
groups.
Mentality and behavior have correlated with chosen strand. They find out
that without the help of mentality and behavior on student's decision making
on their chosen strand, students will encounter difficulties and performed
poorly on their chosen strand.

Research Objectives
The main goal of our research is to determine some factors that can affect
on the academic behavior of the grade 12 ABM students.
We would also aim to:
-Investigate what are the major cause why some grade 12 ABM students are
facing depression, anxiety or breakdowns.
-To perceive what are the challenges and circumstances in the daily lives of
grade 12 ABM students.
-To critically review if the ABM strand was helpful to the mental health of those
grade 12 students under ABM strand.

Significance of the study

6
To the student’s, this research will help ABM students to have realization
that despite of the hardships that they will go through, they still need to
continue and stand by what they have been started and decided. In order to
lead them in a better future. In addition to that, we will highlight some related
studies that will enable these students to better understand on what we are
trying to conduct.
To the parents or guardians, this research will allow them to know the
reason or why did their child decided to be an ABM student. With our study,
they will be able to witness variety of factors as well as reasons that their child
considered in choosing their strand. Also, it will help them to realized that
parents must motivate their child in studying.
To the teacher’s, this research will enable them to identify the major
problem of ABM students; in terms of their attitude regarding on their chosen
strand so that the teachers will be aware and can better understand their
students.

Scope and Delimitation

Scope
The scope of this research was limited to those grade 12 students that
are currently enrolled at ICCT Colleges under ABM strand. This study will
focus on the mentality and behavior of the senior high school students who
chose ABM as their strand during the senior high year that may be used to
strengthen the change of their attitudes in terms of; decision making and as
well as the difficulties of the students towards their chosen strand.
The following are the limitations of the present study:
The population of this research will be those grade 12 students that are
enrolled in ICCT Colleges, S.Y. 2022-2023. The respondents will be limited to
the grade 12 students who are currently taking ABM strand. Meanwhile, we
will not include other academic and non-academic strands. We will also use
survey in our study instrument to allow participants to express their own
sentiments, opinion, experiences and as well as understanding.
