I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
a. identify the characteristics of a good growing media,
b. determine the difference between physical and chemical properties of a
growing media; and
c. assimilate the importance of growing media
III. PROCEDURE
A. Preliminary Activities
Teachers’ Activity Student’s Activity
1. Prayer
“Let us pray, please lead the “good morning sir”
prayer”
What do you think is the contribution of these Sir it helps in the development of a healthy fibrous
characteristics to a growing plant? root system for faster and healthy growth.
Class what do you think are the characteristics Sir to achieve its function. A growing media
of a growing media? should be.
1. Lightweight
2. Has good porosity
3. Well-drained with good water holding
capacity
4. Slightly acidic with good CEC
5. Free of insects, diseases, and weed seeds.
6. Low in silt, ash, and clay content.
7. Easily stored for long periods of time
without changes in physical and chemical
properties; and
8. Easily handled and blended
The development of a healthy, fibrous root
system needs a media with these good
physical properties. Any nutrient or chemical
deficiencies can be compensated for with
additions of fertilizers and amendments.
Let us proceed to the properties of a good Sir, porosity is one of the most important physical
growing media. The first one is the physical properties in a growing because it determines the
properties. What are the physical properties of space available in a container for air, water, and
a growing media class? root growth.
What other physical property of a growing Another physical property of a good growing
media can you give class? media sir is aeration. It is important because the
root system “breathes” in the large, air-filled
pores. Poor aeration will adversely affect root
form and structure and will lead to decreased
seedling vigor.
The growing media must also allow adequate
drainage from macro pores so that water does
not remain at the bottom of the container
where it would inhibit root respiration.
D. Enrichment Activity
I will group you into four, please count from (the students counted from 1 to 4)
1 to 4 starting here. All 1s please stand. You
are group 1, 2 is group 2, 3 is group 3, and 4
is group 4. Group 1 will stay here, 2 will stay
beside group 1, group 3 will stay at the back
of group 1, and 4 will stay there. Please go to
your groups quietly and form a circle. Yes, sir.
E. Generalization
It seems that you have understood our lesson
for today class. I’m going to ask some
questions to confirm if you really understood
our topic for today.
What are the physical characteristics of a Porosity, aeration, and adequate drainage sir
growing media again class?
Slightly acidic, high CEC, and fertile.
Very good, how about the chemical property
of a growing media?
IV. EVALUATION
On a 1/4 sheet of paper answer the following. Identify what is being asked.
1. Poor _____ will adversely affect root form and structure and will lead to decreased
vigor.
2. It determines the space available in a container for air, water, and root growth.
3. The growing media must also allow ________ from macro pores.
4. The desired pH of most growing media is _____________.
5. High ____ results in nutrients being held to the mix and available to the plants.
V. ASSIGNMENT
I will group you into three and each group will bring the following next meeting.
Loam soil
Manure
Rice hull
