Appendix F.2

Factors for Calculation of Immediate Settlement

Immediate settlement of a foundation can be estimated by the following formula:

S = (μ0.μ1.q.B) / E

Where : S = immediate settlement (cm)

q = contact pressure of the foundation (t/m2)
B = width of foundation (cm)
E = deformation modulus of subsoil (t/m2)
μ0, μ1 = settlement factors as shown in Figure F.2

Axial Bearing Capacity of Pile

Bearing Capacity Estimation

Based on Standard Penetration Test Results
(Modified from the recommendation by the Architectural Institute of Japan, 2001)

1. End Bearing Capacity

qu = 300 to 400 N (kN/m2) for driven piles (depending on site specific condition)
= 75 to 100 N (kN/m2) for bored piles (depending on site specific condition)

Where : qu : Ultimate end bearing resistance (kN/m2)

N : Standard penetration test N-value. N is taken as average value at 4B
above pile tip and 1B below pile tip. The maximum value is 50.
B : Pile size, or pile diameter for rounded pile

2. Skin Friction

fs = 2 to 3.33 N (kN/m2) for sand layer (depending on site specific condition)

= 5 N (kN/m2) for clay layer

Where : fs : Ultimate skin friction (kN/m2)

N : Average standard penetration value along pile shaft

Note : Limiting skin friction, fs = 150 to 200kN/m2 depending on site specific condition

3. Allowable Pile Bearing Capacity

Pall = (qu  Ap +  fs  As) / SF

Where : Pall : Allowable pile bearing capacity (tons)

SF : Safety Factor
qu : Ultimate end bearing resistance (kN/m2)
Ap : Cross section area of pile (m2)
fs : Ultimate skin friction (kN/m2)
As : Skin friction area (m2)

4. Safety Factor

The recommended safety factors for both qu and fs are 3 and may be reduced to 2.5 when sufficient
number of loading test results support the prediction.
