(a) Convert the circuit into one with only SPST switches. Mention which of these
SPST switches must be operated together (ON and OFF during the same interval).
(2)
(b) Derive a realizable circuit equivalent using real switches (BJT/Diode). (3)
(c) Derive and draw the dc transformer equivalent circuit of the converter. (5)
2. An interior heater for a German car uses a resistance coil of 20 Ω and must generate 500
W. The available dc sources, with their respective internal resistances, are as follows:-
(a) Vg = 12 V, RS = 0.0388 Ω
(b) Vg = 20 V, RS = 0.2125 Ω
(c) Vg = 24 V, RS = 0.1 Ω
(d) Vg = 40 V, RS = 1.15 Ω
Which of these will you select for the car, given that you have a properly rated boost
converter. Justify your answer. Calculate the duty ratio for stable operation. The
boost inductor has an internal resistance of 0.1 Ω. (4+2+4)
3. A single-phase, full bridge, fully controlled rectifier is supplied from 230V, 50 Hz single-
phase AC mains to supply an R-L load, with R = 5Ω, L = 10 mH. If the triggering
angle is 20◦ , find the minimum value (instantaneous) of the load current under steady-
state operation. Also find the average values of the load voltage and load current.

4. A semi-controlled, full-bridge, single-phase rectifier supplies an R-L load. If the applied
voltage is 230 V, 50 Hz and R = 10Ω, L = 18 mH and the firing angle is 45◦ , find the
minimum value of load current. (5)
