Warming-up activity.
What is a scientific method?
Comment on the statement:
There’s a single scientific method that all scientists follow.

Task 1. Practice reading the academic vocabulary.


Variables, qualitative, quantitative, be measured, be analyzed, be visualized,

Task 2. Read three texts, do the tasks, and answer the questions. Do the
vocabulary activities from Exercises 9-11.

Task 3. Read the information from Unit 41 “Describing Research Methods”.
Write out all the words in bold and use them to complete the table:

Task 4. Answer the questions using information from Unit 41 “Describing
Research Methods”:
1) What does the researcher do using the following research methods: a)
experimental study, b) correlational study, c) survey, d) case study, e) field study?
2) What are the pros and cons of all the mentioned research methods?

Task 5. Do the activities from Exercises 41.1-41.4 to practice academic


vocabulary.
Task 6. Find an article on your field of study by an English-speaking
researcher. Find (an) excerpt/s where the author describes the research
methods and how he/she uses them in his research. Translate this paragraph/s
into Russian. Write out expressions he/she uses to speak about the method/s.
Task 7. Find information about different research methods used by
researches in your field of study. Choose on of them and report on it (about
five minutes). Use PowerPoint Presentation for visual support.
