A RADIO DOCUDRAMA BASED OFF THE MURDERS

SCENE ONE: INT. CAR – EVENING
(Narrator)

NARRATOR: I still can’t believe it happened.


The fact I survived. It’s still
really scary to me that I survived,
that I was even able to survive.
MUSIC LOW AND OMINOUS

NARRATOR: It all happened in November. 8th


November 1974, to be exact. My sister
would normally drive me everywhere,
but I recently got my own car. A
gorgeous 1974 maroon Camaro with a
black top. I loved it. I thought it
was beautiful.
SOUND FOOTSTEPS WALKING, CAR DOOR OPENING,
KEY INSERTED IN CAR, ENGINE TURNING
ON, RADIO FLICKING BETWEEN STATIONS,
FINDS STATION, STARTS DRIVING
NARRATOR: It was in the evening, after a long
day at work. I decided to go to the
Fashion Place Mall and do some
shopping.
SOUND CAR STOPS/PARKS, ENGINE TURNS OFF,
RADIO TURNS OFF, DOOR OPENS,
FOOTSTEPS THAT SLOWLY FADE OUT
SCENE TWO: INT. FASHION PLACE MALL – EVENING
SOUND CROWDS HUSTLING AND BUSTLING WITH
CONVERSATIONS, CASH TILLS GOING OFF

NARRATOR: I walked through the mall, staring


through all the shop windows. Clothes
and furniture and games. It was
amazing. The perfect way to end a day
that wasn’t amazing.
SOUND FOOTSTEPS WALKING, CROWD STILL
HUSTLING AND BUSTLING, HANDS GETTING
PLACED ON GLASS
NARRATOR: I walked over to this book store, I
was staring through the glass. *BEAT*
When he arrived.
MUSIC OMINOUS STRINGS

TED: Evening ma’am, my names Officer


Roseland. Do you drive the Camaro
with the license plate KD2M93?
NARRATOR: He initially startled me. The man
wasn’t wearing a uniform; but that
was my license plate and car so, I
replied
CAROL: Uh, yes, it is, is there an issue
officer?
TED: Not with you miss, but I’m afraid
I’ve caught someone breaking into
your vehicle. Would you mind coming
with me to check if anything’s been
stolen?
NARRATOR: I was slightly hesitant, but from the
fact the officer knew my license and
car. I went with him, purely to help
CAROL: Yes of course officer
TED: Perfect, thank you, if you’d follow
me please
SCENE THREE: EXT. OUTSIDE FASHION PLACE MALL - EVENING
SOUND FOOTSTEPS LEAVING THE MALL, THE
HUSTLE AND BUSTLE LEAVING/FADING OUT,
OUTSIDE AMBIENCE (RUSTLING AND WIND
ETC.)
NARRATOR: As I was leaving the mall, I was
thinking about how creepy I found
this officer ‘Roseland’. I tried to
stop thinking about it because at
the end of the day, I was here to
help an authority figure.
SOUND CAR DOOR OPENING
NARRATOR: I opened the door and nothing was
gone. Everything seemed exactly the
same and as I left it.
CAROL: (Definitively) Nothings missing
officer. Everything’s as it was.
TED: Okay that’s great. *BEAT* Well we do
have the suspect of the breaking and
entering down in the substation at
mall. Would you want to fill out a
complaint?
CAROL: (Hesitant) Uh, yeah sure, let’s go
SCENE FOUR: EXT. BACK OF LAUNDROMAT – EVENING
SOUND FOOTSTEPS WALKING, CAR DOOR SHUTTING
MUSIC LOW AND OMINOUS ALMOST DANGER LIKE
NARRATOR: We walked across the street, it was
to another building, the back of a
laundromat. I was thinking about how
this was all taking longer than I had
anticipated.
SOUND DOOR TRYING TO BE OPENED BUT FAILING
TED: Damn, the doors locked. Well that
must mean they’ve got him at the
police station if he’s not here
MUSIC DANGEROUS AND WARNING LIKE, TENSION
BUILDING
NARRATOR: When this ‘Officer’ said that to me,
that’s when I started feeling uneasy.
There was a horrible smell of alcohol
in his breath and I was getting the
feeling something was up.
CAROL: Sir, before we carry on can I uh,
just see some ID, or a badge of
some kind?
TED: Oh yes, of course you can
SOUND RUSLTING AROUND IN A COAT, PULLING
OUT WALLET AND FLASHING BADGE
CAROL: Oh, okay, thank you
TED: No problem at all, so, should we head
to the station?
NARRATOR: After seeing the badge I was put at
ease, so, I started to follow Officer
Roseland to his car.
SCENE FIVE: EXT. FASHION PLACE MALL CAR PARK – EVENING
SOUND FOOTSTEPS ON CONCRETE, EVENING
AMBIENCE
NARRATOR: We made our way to Officer Roselands
car and I saw it was a Volkswagen
Bug…
MUSIC WARNING AND OMINOUS
NARRATOR: I was a bit confused but, judging by
the fact he had no uniform on too,
and he showed me his badge, I just
assumed he was undercover or
something.
SOUND FOOTSTEPS, CAR DOOR OPENING, CAR DOOR
SHUTTING
SCENE SIX: INT. TED BUNDYS CAR – EVENING
SOUND ENGINE IGNITION, KEY TURNED, SEATBELT
CLICKED IN
TED: I’d highly recommend you put your
seatbelt on ma’am… *BEAT* Please.
CAROL: Uh, no I’m gonna leave it off for now
NARRATOR: The officer was very insistent on me
having my seatbelt on but, it’s being
safe I suppose
SOUND PEDAL BEING PUSHED DOWN, ENGINE GOING
OFF, DRIVING
NARRATOR: We started driving off to the police
station. I was slightly on edge but,
there was a badge and, I grew up in
Murray so if there was anything wrong
with the trip I would know instantly.
NARRATOR: We headed down this side street…
SOUND CAR DRIFITNG/BRAKES/SHARP TURN LIKE
NARRATOR: …and instantly I knew we weren’t in
the right place for the police
station. I also knew this man was
not a police officer
SOUND ENGINE TURNING OFF, KEY LEAVING CAR,
SILENCE
MUSIC WARNING MUSIC, INTENSE, INTENSEITY
PICKS UP OVERTIME
CAROL: What are you doing? This isn’t the
station! What are you doing?!
MUSIC INTENSE DANGER MUSIC
NARRATOR: The man wasn’t speaking anymore… he
wouldn’t say a word to me and in that
moment, I knew, he just changed.
SOUND HANDCUFFS BEING TAKEN OUT, ARM
GRABBED, HANDCUFFS GETTING LOCKED
NARRATOR: He grabbed my arm and locked a
handcuff on my right wrist… he
tried to get the other one locked on
but there was a struggle and… I
fought him off for a bit, but then
SOUND STRUGGLE BEING PLAYED OVER THE
DIALOGUE ABOVE, GUN BEING PULLED
OUT OF BAG, GUN BEING COCKED
TED: (Slowly, menacingly) Don’t you dare
move. Or I swear to god I’ll blow
your fucking head off.
NARRATOR: In that moment… I have never been so
frightened in my entire life.
MUSIC SLOWER SLIGHTLY CALMER MUSIC
SOUND SWOOSHING TO SYMBOLISE MEMORIES
FLASHING QUICK
NARRATOR: …and I know this is cliché but, I
just saw my whole life flash before
my eyes. All I was thinking about was
“My god, my parents are never gonna
know what happened to me. I might
never be found”. When I thought that,
that was the point in which I knew I
had to fight
MUSIC WARNING MUSIC

NARRATOR: I fought him off for a while, he


didn’t get the other cuff on my left
wrist. The cuffs were dangling from
my wrist.
SOUND STRUGGLE, HANDCUFFS DANGLING/MAKING
NOISE
NARRATOR: I remembered I didn’t have my
seatbelt on, which at this point I
realised was easily the thing that
gave me a huge advantage in this life
or death situation.
SOUND: CAR DOOR OPENING, BODY THUD
NARRATOR: I flung open the passenger seat door
and jumped out into the road. I was
in so much pain, I felt such terror.
The man got out of the car, this time
holding a crowbar, and started slowly
edging closer and closer towards me.
MUSIC STARTS PICKING UP, VERY INTENSE
NARRATOR: I was laying on the ground, getting
up as he was approaching me. There
was no one around, I thought my
efforts would be fruitless. I was
going to die. Until…
SOUND CAR DRIVING ALONG ROAD
NARRATOR: There was a car driving right along
the road. They clearly saw what was
happening because both people looked
in shock horror and stopped to let me
get in.
SOUND SCRAMBLING FOOTSTEPS
NARRATOR: I scrambled to my feet and sprinted
for the car, it was my last flicker
of light, of hope…
SOUND FOOTSTEPS RUNNING, CAR DOOR OPENING,
JUMPING IN CAR, CAR DOOR SLAMMING
NARRATOR: I ran over and threw open the door,
jumping in shaking in fear. The man
was so close to ending it all. I had
somehow, in the worst night of my
life, escaped with it, and we
sped off into the Utah night. Leaving
who I now know was Ted Bundy, in the
side street darkness…
SOUND CAR SCREECHING OFF OVER THE TOP OF
THAT
