Section (2): Radar Principles (1)

2.1 An x-band radar uses PRF of 3khz. Compute the unambiguous range and the required bandwidth so that range resolution in
30m. What in the duty cycle?

2.2 A radar transmitter with a peak power of 500kW, a PRF of 400 and a bandwidth of 1 MHz, calculate:

a. Maximum Range.

b. Duty Cycle.

c. Average transmitted Power.

d. Range Resolution.

2.3 A closing target with velocities 200, & 150 m/2. Assume that λ=0.3 m.

a. Compute the Doppler shift


b. In each case compute the time dilation factor.

2.4 An L-band pulsed radar is designed to have an unambiguous range of 100 Km and range resolution ΔR≤100m. The
maximum resolvable Doppler frequency corresponds to Vtarget≤400m/s.

a. Compute the maximum required pulse width,

b. The PRF, and

c. The average transmitted power if Pt =400W .

2.5 Consider an L-band radar with the following specifications: operating frequency 1500 MHz, bandwidth B = 4 MHz , and
antenna gain G = 3000 . Assume target RCS σ=8 m2 , the single pulse SNR is 30 dB, noise figure F = 4dB, temperature T°
=300K , and maximum range R =250 Km .

a. Compute the peak power,


b. The pulse width, and
c. The minimum detectable signal for this radar.

2.6 Consider a low PRF C-band radar operating at f=1500MHz . The antenna has a circular aperture with radius 2m. The peak
power is Pt= 1MW and the pulse width is t= 2µs .The PRF is 250 Hz, and the effective temperature is T=600 K. Assume radar
losses and target RCS =10m2 .

. Calculate the radar’s unambiguous range.

b. The range R° that corresponds to SNR=0dB.

c. The SNR at R=0.7R°.
