The cross-section of the steel bars BE and AD in Figure STQ1 are 6 x 18 mm. Determine the deflections of
the points A, B, and C of rigid bar ABC, knowing that E = 200 GPa.

At 20°C, the dimensions of an aluminium rod (Ea = 70 GPa, αa = 23.6 x 10-6/°C) and a steel link (Es = 200
GPa, αs = 11.7 x 10-6/°C) are illustrated in Figure STQ2. Initially the aluminium rod is longer than the gap
in the steel link by 0.15 mm. The steel link is heated to the point where the aluminium rod may be inserted
freely. The temperature of the entire assembly is then increased to 150°C. Determine a) the rod's final
stress and b) the link's ultimate stress.

Each member of the truss in Figure STQ3 is made from steel (E = 200 GPa); member BC has a cross-section
area of 800 mm2, while the other members have a cross-section area of 400 m2. Determine the deflection
of point D induced by the 60 kN load using the Work Energy method.

STQ4 (10 Marks)
Two solid steel shafts (G = 77.2 GPa) are attached to a coupling disk B and are fixed at supports at A and
C as shown in Figure STQ4. Determine (a) the torsional reaction at each support, (b) the maximum
shearing stress in shaft AB, and (c) the maximum shearing stress in shaft BC, for the loading given.
