A control chart's purpose is to establish upper and lower bounds of acceptable performance given

normal variation. In other words, they provide an excellent means of monitoring any type of process you
have in place, allowing you to learn how to improve your poor performance while maintaining your
successes. Control charts are designed for speed in industrial settings: the faster the control charts
respond after a process shift, the faster the engineers can identify the broken machine and return the
system to producing high-quality products. A lag in testing at a factory could result in thousands of parts
being produced incorrectly before anyone notices the machine is broken, resulting in wasted time and
materials as well as angry customers.
