Activity – Technopreneurship

1. Name a successful entrepreneurial team you personally admire. How would you
classify it in the context of the entrepreneur capabilities shown in the learning
material? Do these elements of entrepreneurship apply to it?

The entrepreneurial team that I personally admire the most is Samsan Tech—a
fictional entrepreneurial team from the Korean drama Start-Up. The team is composed of
Seo Dal-mi, a woman who dreams of becoming Korea's Steve Jobs; Nam Do-san, the
founder of Samsan Tech; Lee Chul-san and Kim Yong-san, both friends of Nam Do-san since
they were in university; and Jeong Sa-ha, a former lawyer who quits her job to pursue
something less generic. In the story, they entered the fictional Sandbox and started a start-up
company inclined with technology. At the end of the series, they achieved the success they all
have been dreaming of. It may be fictional but they really inspired me to also become
successful in the future.

In the context of entrepreneurial capabilities, I would classify Samsan Tech as a team

that has all the required capabilities of an entrepreneurial team. All of them have talent,
knowledge, and skills within the industry where the opportunity occurs, especially Do-san,
Chul-san, and Yong-san with are talented and skillful in technology and electronics. They seek
important opportunities with sizable challenges and potential returns, can select a timely
opportunity in a short period, can convert an opportunity into a workable and marketable
enterprise, can accommodate uncertainty and ambiguity, and create a vision of the venture to
communicate the opportunity of staff and allies. In an episode, they had an opportunity of
designing a smart car. They encountered lots of challenges making it, but they successfully
converted it into a workable enterprise. They also creatively explore a process that results in
the concept of a valuable solution for the problem or need, seek to evaluate and mitigate the
risks of the venture, are skilled at selling ideas, and have a wide network of potential partners.
Hence, they had been able to provide solutions to the challenges and risks they had
encountered while doing the smart car. And after the success of their smart car, they gained
so many investors. They also flexibly adapt to changing circumstances and competitors. Dal-
mi’s sister Won In-jae was one of their competitors in Sandbox and they thought of ways to be
uniquely different from their competitors in the same industry, like In-jae’s team. They also
attract, train, and retain talented educated people capable of multidisciplinary insights. Do-san,
Chul-san, and Yong-san particularly trained Dal-mi and Sa-ha in the technology industry since
it’s new for them. Plus, they also added SH Venture Capital team leader Han Ji-pyeong not to
be an official member of Samsan Tech but as an adviser. And of course, they all want to
succeed. They are achievement-oriented, thus, that’s the reason why all of them entered
Sandbox.

Furthermore, all the elements of the ability to overcome a challenge apply to them.
They can deal with a series of tough issues, can create solutions and work to perfect them,
can handle many tasks simultaneously, are resilient in the face of setbacks, are willing to work
hard and not expect easy solutions, have well-developed problem-solving skills, and can learn
and acquire the skills needed for the tasks at hand. That is why they have been able to finish
their project on smart cars and make it successful despite the cheating and ways made by their
competitors to bring them down. In the end, they had successfully finished the project and
become real-time entrepreneurs.

2. Give at least two "Voice of Customer" techniques and identify an enterprise who
applies those technique(s).

Voice of Customer or VoC refers to a term that describes your feedback of the
customers about their experiences with and expectations for your products or services. It
mainly focuses on the needs of the customers. There are lots of “Voice of Customer”
techniques but two of the most obvious ones are customer reviews and blogs and forums.
And as a music lover, an enterprise that I surely know that applies these techniques is Spotify.
Spotify allows its customers, especially those who installed their app using Google Play Store,
to rate them and give them a review. Currently, they have 27 million reviews on the Google
Play Store with an average of 4.3-star ratings. It also has a forum site which they call
“community”. It is a place we users can put topics about their experiences or problems while
using the app or software. And through these techniques, Spotify will be able to know the
sentiments and feedback of their users and customers.
