Self-Assessment Question 3.5.

How does the following animals use their body parts to enable them to live in various places?

1. Jaguar

2. Grizzly Bear

3. Bonobo

4. Zebra

5. Sheep

6. Crocodile

7. Goat

8. Fish

9. Gorilla

10. Butterfly

1. Jaguars have adapted to the wet environment of the tropical rainforest. They are excellent swimmers,
and unlike other cats, they seek out water for bathing and swimming. The jaguar's fur keeps it
camouflaged in the tropical rainforest.

2. Grizzly Bear use their long, sharp claws and powerful digging strength, they dig dens for themselves
where they nest through the winter. In their dens, grizzly bears enter their hibernation state, during
which their body temperature and heart rate drop.

3. Bonobos move quadrupedally in a special position called knuckle-walking. In trees, they also tend to
suspend themselves from their arms to move around easier. And on the ground, they can walk bipedally
(upright on its two feet) as well, making it the most human-like of all apes.

4. Zebras live in open, grassy areas and have several adaptations, or special characteristics that help
them survive in their habitat. Scientists think their stripes serve as sunscreen and bug repellent, act as
camouflage, letting them hide against a background, and help them recognize each other.

5. Crocodiles can move about on land - with surprising speed, particularly when alarmed or angry - but
their bodies are mainly adapted for a life in water. The nostrils, eyes and ears lie along the top of the
head so that the animal can hear, see, smell and breathe when the rest of the body is submerged.

6. Sheeps - Although sheep and goats are virtually defenseless, they have many physical adaptations
that help them evade their predators. The combination of widely spaced eyes and large rectangular
pupils allows for incredible peripheral vision.

7. Goats have many adaptations (structures that function like tools to help them survive). These include
two sets of toes on each foot to help them balance, special eyes to help them see in a wider range to
look out for predators, and a 4 chambered stomach to help them digest rough food.
8. Fish are aquatic, ectothermic vertebrates. Many structures in fish are adaptations for their aquatic
lifestyle. For example, fish have a stream-lined body that reduces water resistance while swimming. Fish
have gills for “breathing” oxygen in water and fins for propelling and steering their body through water.

9. Gorillas have many adaptations that help them to survive, like their opposable thumbs that help them
to gather plants to eat and their large arm muscles for climbing trees, knuckle walking and defense.
Troops of gorillas are protected by the silverbacks, who are the dominant males of the groups.

10. A butterfly's wings are its most important part since they enable it to move about for food, shelter, a
mate, and all the other things it needs. Its wings are very strong, and they are supported and shaped by
a network of veins, just like those in a leaf.
