V. Lesson Proper

Thank You Ma’am by Langston

Hughes.

Narrated in the third person by an

unnamed limited-omniscient
narrator, "Thank You Ma'am" begins
with Mrs. Jones walking home at
eleven p.m. when Roger, the story's
protagonist, tries to steal her purse.
The heavy purse throws Roger off
balance and he falls down. Mrs.
Jones—a large and imposing woman—
kicks his bottom and lifts him by his
shirt. She asks if he isn't ashamed of
himself. He says he is ashamed.

Deducing that he has no one at home,

Mrs. Jones decides to take him to her
home and make him
wash his face.

She puts him in a half-nelson neck

hold and drags him up the street as
he struggles to get away, uncertain
what she is doing. At her home, which
is a large single room in a rooming
house full of other poor people, Mrs.
Jones instructs Roger to wash his
face using warm water and a towel.
She lets go of him and he considers
running out the open door. Instead,
he does as he is told.
He considers running again after he
finishes drying his face. But
something about Mrs. Jones's trust
disarms him, and he doesn't try to
flee. She asks if he was hungry,
answering herself that he must have
been, since he tried to snatch her
purse.

But he admits he wanted to buy

some blue suede shoes. To this, she
surprises him by saying that he could
have asked her for the money. She
tells him she was also young once
and wanted things she could not
afford. She has done things she
would rather not tell him—or God—
about. Roger stands dumbfounded
with his mouth open. She knows he
expected her to say "but," but she
doesn't: she is simply honest about
having been in the same situation as
him.
Mrs. Jones instructs him to sit down
while she heats some lima beans and
ham, and makes cocoa. He knows he
could leave through the door, and
that she can't see him behind the
screen that separates off the
kitchen. He also sees that she has
left her purse on the
daybed. But he

sits somewhere she will see him in

her periphery. He doesn't want her
to mistrust him.
During dinner, she doesn't ask the
boy anything about where he lives,
or his parents, or anything else that
would embarrass him. Instead, she
tells him about her job in a hotel
beauty shop.
After dinner, she gives him ten
dollars to buy the shoes he wants,
and asks him to behave from then
on, and to not snatch anybody's
purses. As he goes out the door, the
boy tries to say something more
than just "thank you ma'am," but he
hardly manages to say "thank you"
before she closes the door. The story
ends with the narrator commenting
that the boy never sees her again.
VI. Motivation

A. Introduction

Based on the activity that we have Ma’am, I think our lesson for today is
done, what do you think is our lesson all about the elements of a short
for today? story.

Very good, today we are going to Yes, Ma’am! We are ready for today’s

short story. Are you class ready for

today's discussion?

B. Presentation of the lesson

Since we are done reading the story

of Thank You Ma’am by Langston
Hughes. Today, we will be discussing
the elements of this short story.

Take note class that we will going to

discuss the plot, setting, and
narrative of this literary elements.

I will discuss to you the literary

element of a short story and that is
plot, and to explain to you what a
plot is. Writers use plot to know what
is happen to the story or the series
of events that takes place. and also,
it is the action of the stories that
drives the narrative forward.

Plot is a literary device that writers

use to structure what happens in a
story. However, there is more to this
device than combining a sequence of
events. Plots must present an event,
action, or turning point that creates
conflict or raises a dramatic
question, leading to subsequent
events that are connected to each
other as a means of “answering” the
dramatic question and conflict.
The arc of a story’s plot features a

causal relationship between a

beginning, middle, and end in which

the conflict is built to a climax and

resolved in conclusion.

Now that you know what a plot is,

can somebody give me the plot in

the story of Thank you Ma’am by (Students, raised their hands)

Langston Hughes?

Ma'am, i think the plot of the story is

Okay that’s amazing, Thank you very about A teenage boy tries to steal
much. the purse of a black woman at night,
on the street. The woman refuses to
call the police and takes the boy
home, feeds him and teaches him
something about right and wrong.
Now that you know the characters

in the story, the second element that

you have to learn is the setting. What

is a setting? The setting is the time

and place or when and where of the

story. The setting may also include
the environment of the story, which
can be made up of the physical
location, climate, weather, or social
and cultural surroundings.

There are various ways that time

and place indicate setting. Time can
cover many areas, such as the
character’s time of life from their
birth up to the present. It can also
include the time of day, time of year,
time period such as the past, present,
or future,etc. Place also
covers a lot of areas, such as a
certain building, room in a building,
country, city, beach, in a mode of
transport such as a car, bus, boat,
indoors or out, etc. The settingof a
story can change throughout the
plot.
The environment includes

geographical location such as beach

or mountains, the climate and

weather, and the social or cultural

aspects such as a school, theatre,

meeting, club, etc.

Commonly, we like to describe the

setting of the story as the place

where the story took place, but if we

would provide an explanation to

define a setting, we might want to

include the time and the date where

a certain scenario happened, so that

people would picture the setting of

the story perfectly.

Now that you know what a setting is, (Students, raised their hands)
can somebody give me the setting in

the story of Thank you Ma’am?

Yes, Ms. _______. The setting in the story

of Thank you

a neighborhood that is part of Upper

your answer. .

Now, let's moved to the third

discussions which is narrative. So

what is the function of narrative in
the literary elements?

A narrative is a sequence of
connected events, whether real or
fictional. The definition of narrative
is the same as that of a story. There
are many types of narratives, such as
non-fiction (journalism, memoir,
biography, etc.), prose, drama, and
some forms of poetry, songs, and
video games.
Examples of narrative can be
found everywhere in human
expression and creativity, from
everyday speech to performance of
all types, including television,
movies, radio, and even in more
static arts such as sculpture,
painting, and photography. Even
scientific reports may contain
elements of narrative, as they
describe the initial hypotheses and
how those theses were challenged
and changed over the course of the
study. Thus, narrative is truly a vital
aspect of the experience of being
human and has been since the
beginning of communication.

Narrative actually predates

literature in the sense that oral
storytelling has been a part of every
culture of humans that has ever had

verbal communication. Narratives

through the means of oral
storytelling were important to
reinforce moral lessons for a culture,
pass down history and traditions,
and share values and norms.
Narratives were also a means of
entertainment and have helped
people in every age develop a sense
of identity, deepen their
understanding of human psychology,
and make meaning out of life.
Narrative is considered one of the
four rhetorical modes of discourse,
along with exposition,
argumentation, and description. Of
these four modes, it is the one in
which, generally speaking, the
narrator communicates a story
directly to the reader.

Now that you know what a narrative (Students, raised their hands)
is, can somebody give me the

narrative in the story of Thank you

Ma’am by Langston Hughes?

Yes, Mr. _________. In the story "Thank You Ma'm," a boy

named Roger wanted a pair of blue

suede shoes, so he decided to steal

a stranger's purse. However, Mrs.

Luella Bates Washington Jones did

not send him to jail, but instead, she

took Roger home and taught him a

lesson. With the intention of

teaching Roger to do the right thing,

Mrs. Jones took him home.

Very good. Indeed!

Now that we learned the Three (3)

literary elements of a short story...

VII. Generalization

Who can summarize what we

discussed for this day? Sir/Ma'am, today I have learned

the Three (3) literary elements of a
short story. and those are plot,
settings, and narrative I also learned
that the plot is is a series of causes-
and-effects which shape the story
as a whole. And the setting is the
time and place that it occurs. Every
story has a setting. The setting helps
to create the mood of the story. It
influences how readers feel about
the text. Lastly narrative is the
telling of related events in a
cohesive format that centers around
Amazing! I can see that you are really a central theme or idea.
listening to our discussion.

Excellent! Class, what do you think is

the importance of learning the

elements of a short story? (Students, raised their hands)

Recognizing each of these elements

helps the reader to understand the

structure and meaning of a short

story.
Yes. Thank you for your answer. Now,

what do you think is the moral lesson The Moral lesson that we could get
of the story? from the story is the importance of

the compassion because we read

how Mrs. Jones chose to forgive

Roger for his wrongdoings, even

though Roger tried to steal her bag

still she allowed him to enter her

house and offered him food for his

dinner, she even gave money to

Roger to buy his shoes. We can also

learn the value of ethics to a person,

because we read how Roger

embarrassed himself
by committing

theft to a good person, so it is

important that we always stick to

our ethics and principles and be a

good person every day.

That is correct! Very good!

VIII. Application

Now that we know the elements of a

short story, choose your one favorite

short story and identify at least

three (3) elements briefly. Write your

answer in 1/2 sheet of papers. You

have 5 minutes to do so.

It seems like you are all done. Please! (Students passing their papers
pass your papers. forward)

IX. Assignment

For your assignment, I want you to

imagine that you are Roger, and ten

(10) years have passed after you met

Mrs. Jones. And with that, I want you

to write a thank you letter for Mrs.

Jones, tell her the changes that

occurred in your life, and the

achievements that you made after

you met her.

Format for the assignment:
