Midsummer
By: Manuel Arguilla

In this story, a man named Manong encounters a

beautiful Filipina woman named Ading in a well on a sizzling
summer day. The man and his cart are tied to a bull, and they
travel along a solitary road that spans among the parched
grasses, hills, and mountains. The road is bumpy, with the
sun setting and the aridity of the place. The woman is
described from head to toe with such detail that one can feel
perspiration due to the intense climate.

Manong is situated on the cart fastened to a bull for leading

the way, traversing over a solitary road that stretched in
twists and turns among the parched grasses, hills, and
mountains. The road is bumpy, but the lethargy of the place
remains the same. The deep blue sea meets the lighter blue
sky, and the scent of fresh, clean, and pleasant air ensues
from soils and trees.

Ading is an eligible Filipina granted by curvy build, skin as

white as a milk, and vigorous sexual appeal. She wears a
see-through, home knitted, and checkered blouse and skirt.
After gazing at each other, she leaves in an instance that
Manong did not even notice. She was mysterious in a way
since she looked and left, leaving mixed signals in that
particular setting.

Manong comes down off his cart and walks the bull toward
the direction where he had encountered Ading again in a
well under a mango tree. He sees her soaked bosom with
water from her jar, and she does not look back to the leering
young man. As soon as she was gone, Manong positioned his
face down to the well and endeared the woman's physical
attractions. The woman now has black and thick hair and
white skin.

The foraging bull is given a heap of hay and a bucket of

water, which the bull munches and slurps indifferently.
Manong is forced to fan himself and whistle from the sea. He
eats his dinner, which includes rice, an egg inside a coconut
shell, a bamboo tube of salt, a plain cake of brown sugar in a
banana leaf, and dried shrimps.

Ading comes down the path again with a different set of

clothes, and Manong tries to eat and choke while staring
under the yoke of darkness in his hat. They speak softly,
uncertainly, and respectfully, and they both smile at each
other.
Ading spills Manong's bucket of water into his food, splashes
and immerses the ground. Manong contended that he will be
the one to refill his bucket, and it was not her fault it
occurred. He lent his arm for the rope, and Ading studied
how brawny it was and trusted him.

Ading invites Manong into their house, despite being

impoverished, to make up for her trouble. She pauses
half-turned for his answer while the jar is above her head.
Later, as Ading tells him that he already told her mother
about him, Manong comes after her, worrying about the
disturbance he would make for Ading's family.

As the bull stops to eat a tuft of grass, Manong uses the rope
to slap the bull. Ading waited as she cannot hold back her
feelings of bringing him. Behind her, as they continued the
trail, Manong thought how kind-hearted and lovely she was
while holding the bucket and walking graciously. He sniffed
the unmoving air, seizing the moment.

In the end, Manong feels strong internally, beside the

incredible woman he is with, like all was possible and
endless. He grows to love her in a small amount of time. His
last words were that he could follow the lender, the figure
ahead of him to the ends of the world.

Follow up questions:

✔ So, what do you think the story is all about?

“The story is about attraction and love during
the first meeting between two people.”

“Very good. The story of Midsummer is one of the revered

works in the Philippines. It is based on the power of
attraction and love that exist between two strangers, a
young maiden, Mahinhin Filipina named Ading and a young
Binata boy named Manong.”

✔ Who is the woman in the story?

“Ading.”

✔ Who invite Ading to eat under the shade of tree?

“Manong.”

✔ Why do you think the writer came up with the title

“Midsummer”? “Because the story is based on the Filipino
attributes and setting. Also, the main characters
met during the midsummer.”

✔ Does this story relate to a real-life situation? Explain.

“Yes, ma’am. Because in real life, it happens that
anytime and anywhere we can meet someone
we may feel attracted to and fall in love with.”

Manuel Arguilla is all about. You will be having a group
