cheerful etc.”

“How about the mood, who can tell me what the mood in “Ma’am, the mood explains how the author’s tone,

E. Lesson Proper
“So for today I want you to be familiarized with the
different kinds of imagery in literature.”

“Imagery is a device used to help the reader visualize

the information of a text by the use of words. Reading
the literary piece over and over will help you familiarize
with the different kinds of imagery in literature.”

“So tell me, what is your own understanding of “Ma’am, Imagery is used to tickle the imagination of
Imagery?” Princess, Shielo the reader. Sometimes the author uses Imagery so
that the reader and understand the literary piece
“Okay, that is correct thank you” better”

“ We have five sensory imagery used in literature”

“The first one is Visual imagery, do you have any idea “Ma’am it has something to do with what we see
what visual imagery is? Yes Marvin” and how we visualize things from a literary piece”

“Very good. Visual imagery utilizes our sense of sight

and lets us know how something looks. It may include
colors, brightness, shapes, sizes, and patterns. Let us
see the example given”

“This is a poem entitled Prelude by T.S. Elliot. Class, let

us read it altogether “

Prelude by T.S. Elliot’s

On broken blinds and chimney-pots,

And at the corner of the street A lonely cab-horse (Class reads the poem)
steams and stamps.
And then the lighting of the lamps

“Can you tell me what word/s were used to express

Visual imagery in the poem Prelude? Mj” “Broken blinds and chimney-pots” and “lighting of
the lamp”
“In here, the author wanted to visualize images of the
wintry evening in the reader’s mind. It also includes the
scene on the street with lights, smoke, and terrible
conditions seen by the speaker.”

“Did the class get it? Are there any questions?”

“Yes Ma’am” “None so far”
“Okay, let’s move on to the next one”

“The next one is Olfactory imagery… Ken Patrick do

“It has something to do with our sense of smell or
you have any idea what this is about?”
what we smell ma’am”
“That’s right, Olfactory imagery deals with the way our
brain perceives their smell in a text. Here is an
example.”

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

“My captor, whoever he was, seemed not much taller

than I…. I smelled a faint flowery scent, as of lavender

water, and something more spicy, mingled with the
sharper reek of male perspiration.”

“How about this one, can you tell me what word/s were “Faint flowery scent” and “Male perspiration”
used to express Olfacory imagery in this piece? Bianca”

“This explains a protagonist’s interaction with a stranger

when he tries to get closer to her. She describes his
personality combined with the type of perfume he is
wearing and also indicates that he is tired because she’s
able to smell his sweat.”
“Something about the taste in a text ma’am like
“How about Gustatory imagery? Ella” sweetness, sourness, saltiness etc.”

“Okay, Gustatory imagery appeals to the sense of taste

and describes how something tastes. Let’s see the
example given.”

This Is Just To Say by William Carlos William

I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox and (Class reads the poem)
which you were probably saving for breakfast. Forgive
me they were delicious so sweet and so cold.
“The plums that were in the icebox” and “So sweet
“Now can you tell me what word/s are used to express and so cold”
gustatory imagery in the literary piece? Suzette”

“Here the poet is discussing the taste of sweet icy

plums. The imagery helps the writer to make the reader
imagine the cool syrupy taste of the fruit and cool drink.”
“None Ma’am”
“Any questions so far?”

“Okay let’s head on the next one, Tactile imagery, what “Tactile imagery is all about the sense of touch or
do you think based on the word itself… Yes Marielle” how it feels, like the temperature, texture etc.”

“That’s right, Tactile imagery is the sense of touch or

how we imagine it feels in the text. Let us see the
example given”

The Great Gatsby

They were both in white, and their dresses were rippling (Class reads the poem)
and fluttering as if they had just been blown back in after
a short flight around the house.

“Can you tell me what word/s were used to express “Their dresses were rippling and fluttering”
tactile imagery in the literary piece? Marvin”

“In the example given, the author has combined visual

imagery with tactile imagery to describe the movement
and touch of the dresses.”

“And lastly, Auditory imagery. What do you think about “Ma’am it describes what we hear, from music to
this one? Okay how about the others? Sunshine” noise to pure silence”

“Very good. It appeals to our sense of hearing or how we

hear sound based on the text. Let’s see the example
given.”
