“The Old Colonel”

I think I have had a very interesting life. I’m 73 now and I don’t work anymore. I was in the
army for 51 years. I retired when I was 69. I have been to so many countries that I can’t
remember all of them. I’ve been to Australia six or seven times and to South Africa three
times. I have also been once to Russia but I didn’t
• like it at all: much too cold for me!

They say that love is the greatest thins and I agree. I’ve been married four times but never
for more than five years. I don’t think women really understand me!

I’ve never been on television, but I’ve been on the radio once. It was a programmer about
life in the military about twenty years ago. I met the Prime Minister on the same day.
Actually, I’ve met a lot of famous people: members of the royal family, famous politicians
and also famous cinema and television personalities. I’ve never met the American President
though which is a pity.

Because I’ve travelled a lot, I’ve seen a lot of wonderful things and have also eaten and
drunk some strange foods and drinks. I ate cat and rat in India and drank something called
Mirto on a little island in Italy many years ago.

Reading and Comprehension

MY BIRTHDAY, A HAPPY DAY!

My boyfriend, John, and I have been together for about six months. My 16th birthday is coming up and
I am so excited because my previous birthdays were bad. Of course, I am crushed because he just told
me his family is going away to Florida this weekend!
I don’t know what I should do! We have already planned the greatest party ever for the weekend! We
have just sent the invitations to our friends, and they all are excited to come over. We have bought
snacks, drinks, and decoration stuff.
Although we have been texting all day, we haven’t decided what to do yet. I told him that I would like to
celebrate my birthday together but that I knew being with his family is crucial for him.
Whatever decision we take, I know I can finally have an amazing birthday because my boyfriend is a
great person, and I am so happy with him that even if we can’t celebrate this weekend I couldn't have
asked for a better boyfriend!"

READING COMPREHENSION
1. Lee el texto. Contesta las preguntas.

Thanksgiving Dinner
Last Thanksgiving my parents had a large family
dinner at their house. Getting ready for Thanksgiving
dinner takes a lot of work.

The day started well and by late afternoon we had

completed most of the work. Everyone had helped to
make the meal a success. We had put the turkey in
the oven earlier that day, so the house was starting to
smell like roast turkey. The grandchildren had
finished setting the table for Thanksgiving dinner. My
aunt had made two pies for dessert, a pumpkin pie
and an apple pie. My brother and I had peeled the
carrots and the potatoes. We had just turned on the stove to start cooking the vegetables when the power
went out! The oven stopped working! We couldn’t cook the vegetables! The turkey wouldn’t finish cooking!
We waited. We talked. We went for a walk.

We had waited two hours by the time the power came back on. We had almost given up hope. Dinner was
late that night, but it was a Thanksgiving dinner that we won’t forget.

1. When had we completed thanksgiving dinner work?

2. Who had set the table?

3. What had my aunt made for thanksgiving dinner?

4. What have we done when the power went out?

5. Had the turkey been cooked before the power went out?

6. How many hours had we waited when the power came back?

ALEX GOT AN APARTMENT
I can’t believe I got that apartment. I submitted my application last week, but I
didn’t think I had a chance of actually getting it. When I showed up to take a look
around, there were at least twenty other people who had arrived before me.
Most of them had already filled out their applications and were already leaving.
The landlord said I could still apply, so I did.

I tried to fill out the form, but I couldn’t answer half of the questions. They wanted
me to include references, but I didn’t want to list my previous landlord because I
had had some problems with him in the past and I knew he wouldn’t recommend
me. I ended up listing my father as a reference.

It was a total luck that he decided to give me the apartment. It turns out that the
landlord and my father went to high school together. He decided that I could
have the apartment before he looked at my credit report. I really lucked out!
