USES OF WOULD
Teacher Alessandro
Odoardi
USES OF WOULD:
Future in the past (1)
The "future in the past" is used to refer to something that was the
future at some time in the past. It does not matter if the future event
happened or not as it was thought to be the future at the time.
Examples:
a) I would imagine they'll arrive for on dinner time.
b) She would guess you'll apply for the
scholarship.
c) I would think you are going to try on
these clothes.
d) They would suppose we'll break up.
USES OF WOULD:
Wishes
We use "would" to express wishes in certain situations.
Examples:
a) They don't like me. I'm sure they wish I'd resign.
b) I bet Mary wishes we would work together.
c) They love me. It's certain they wish I'd
come back.
d) You can't deny Mark wishes I'd become
his girlfriend.
EXTRA:
Was/were going to
"Was/were going to" is often used to talk about an intention or plan
that didn’t happen. It's another form of the "future in the past".
Examples:
a) I was going to tell her but I didn’t have time.
b) They were going to start the project on Monday
but they had to change plans due to an operational issue.
c) He told me he was going to travel by bus so I’ll
wait for him at the stop.
d) She said she was going to wash her hair tonight
so couldn’t go out.
