Doctor Test for Petroleum Samples

1 Pour 10 ml sample into 4 oz. glass bottle.

2 Add 5 ml Doctor Solution (Sodium Plumbite).

3 Stopper bottle with cork and shake vigorously for 15 seconds.

4 Add small pinch (20 – 25 mg) of sublimed sulfur.

5 Shake again for 15 seconds.

6 Allow to settle and observe within 2 minutes.

Interpret result as follows:


7.1 If the doctor solution is discolored or if the yellow color of the sulfur is noticeably changed, report test as positive.

7.2 If sample remains unchanged in color and the sulfur remains bright yellow or only slightly discolored with gray or flecked with
black, report test as negative.
