Some important Paper 6 Experiments

Determine the mass of a load using a balancing method.

The load Q is placed on the meter rule so that its center is exactly over a specific mark.
A mass P is placed on the rule and its position adjusted so that the rule is as near as
possible to being balanced
Investigate the resistance of a lamp filament or a resistance

Investigating the effect of the length of resistance wire in a circuit on the potential difference
across a lamp.

This is carried out by moving the sliding contact C difference distances d from point A, voltage,
and current are recorded.
Determine the focal length of a lens or the magnification of an image.

The illuminated object is shown in the following diagram

The distance (a) between the illuminated object and the lens is set.
The screen is moved until a sharp image of the illuminated object is seen.
The distance (b) is then measured.
Compare the rates of cooling of two thermometer bulbs under wet and dry conditions.
Determine the density of an object and a liquid.
Determine the spring constant for a spring

A meter rule is clamped in position near the spring.

A set square is used to obtain an accurate reading of the position of the bottom of the
coiled part of the spring from the meter rule.
Loads are hung at point x gradually and the corresponding new length is measured (L).
The extension for each load is calculated from the equation ( 𝑥𝑥 = 𝐿𝐿 – 𝐿𝐿0 ).
Determine the cooling rate.

The student pours about 200 cm3 or 250 cm3 of hot water with a
temperature of about 80°C into the beaker.
The temperature θ of the hot water is recorded at time t = 0. And the
stopwatch is started immediately.
The temperature is recorded every 30 seconds time interval to about 180
seconds.
Investigating the factors that affect the average speed of a ball falling in the
water.

The experiment is carried out by releasing the ball at the top of the tube to fall into the
liquid.
Two points are marked on the tube and the distance between them is measured using a
rule.
The time needed for the sphere to travel between the two marks is measured.
The speed is calculated by dividing the distance by the time.
