REFLECTION

Schools have been incorporating Jean Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive Development in

teaching. This influence is recognized through the organization of the curriculum where learners
are provided with topics in accordance to their cognitive abilities. By studying the age-related
changes and transitions between each development, it helps schools in guiding the learners to
achieve their full potential. It helps educators in becoming more effective by understanding the
learner’s cognitive development, whilst providing them with their proper needs.

Since learning is adaptive, this lesson suggest that it is best to provide learners with
appropriate experiences and learning materials. By presenting them challenges, we help to
improve their thinking skills. Having them engaged in an active discussion and group learning
would help them see through other people’s perspective. Their readiness will always be
considered while preparing these activities. It is required of me to be more sensitive in
recognizing their current abilities and understanding of certain subjects. Piaget’s study most
likely suggest that teaching should be learner-centered. It is best to learn through experience and
create ideas from previous experiences. It should be just dumping them with facts and expecting
good results. It is absolutely vital to first recognize their cognitive level. This will be the basis in
preparing the lessons and activities.

The idea of constructing knowledge based on experience is not as easy as it sounds.

Again, each learn on different phase. Providing variety of challenges and new experiences are
beneficial. This will build schemas which will lead to understanding upcoming lessons. It really
a process that requires understanding of cognitive development as well as human behavior.
Hopefully, by putting together all the knowledge from each lesson I would be able to equip
learners with tools that helps them to continually construct knowledge even outside of the shool.
