SOLID SOLUTION
Saving Philippines from an impending doom
By Xyza P. Facun
1.
Finally, the [1] ban on single-used plastics has reached F.
Bangoy National High School. With three months of its full
operation, the amount of plastic waste in the campus has reduced
significantly. However, [2] banana leaves, paper wrappers and 2.
cups used as alternatives to plastic took over its reign as main
pollutants. Thus, [3] Bangoy needs to go beyond banning single-
used plastics and strengthen the implementation of Republic Act 3.
9003 or known as Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of
2000.
However, almost two decades since the implementation,
the country is still struggling in enforcing the law. [4] The 2015
4.
study “Plastic waste input from land into the ocean” shows that the
country accumulates 6,237, 653 kg of plastic waste per day, 81%
of which ends up in landfills, dumps or the natural environment. In
fact, according to Department of Environment and Natural
Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy A. Cimatu, Philippines belongs
to 5 countries who are large contributors of plastics waste in the
world’s oceans. This only means that the stipulations in R.A. 9003
is a far cry from reality.
Amidst this, we are still fortunate to see a glimmer of hope
in R.A. 9003, only if this will be enforced properly. For example,

1
[5]Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)
reported that they had surpassed their 2019 solid waste
management target, noting that 605 solid waste management 5.
projects had been evaluated. This only shows that when our
enforcers religiously commit to do their job, all laws meant to
protect the land will prosper.
[6] The school’s zero waste plastic policy is certainly a
bold step towards achieving genuine and palpable change for the
6.
environment. However, this will not be the sole saving grace that
will lift us from the depths of our despair. [7] As one Bangoyan, we
should not wait for our planet to crumble right before our very
eyes. Instead, let us be united in fighting the war that we have
7.
long started. Thus, this is an adrenaline call for everybody that our
actions must be on point towards a clean and green country that
Filipinos deserve.
