VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS

Titration No.1

Aim:

To find the normality and strength of the given sodium hydroxide solution using a standard solution of
0.1N HCl solution.

Apparatus used:

1.Pipette

2. Burette

3. Burette Stand

4. Conical flask

Chemicals used:

NaOH, HCl and Phenolphthalein

Theory:

NaOH reacts with HCl according to the equation

NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H2O

The indicator used is phenolphthalein which is colourless in acidic medium and pink colour in basic
medium.

Procedure

1.Wash the burette with water and rinse it with the given NaOH solution. Fill the burette with NaOH and
note the initial burette reading.

2. Pipette out 20ml of HCl solution in a clean conical flask and add 2-3 drops of phenolphthalein
indicator and titrate it against the solution taken in the burette.until a permanent light pink colour is
obtained.

3. Note the final burette reading. Repeat the titration to get concordant reading.

Result

Normality of NaOH = …………. N

Strength of NaOH = …………g/l
