ACTIVITY # 4
Ohm’s Law

Introduction
Although the three quantities, current, voltage and resistance, are used differently, they
are related to each other. Ohm's law states the relationship between voltage, current and
resistance:
V=IxR

whereas V is the voltage, R is the resistance and I is the current.

Ohm's law states that the current through a conductor is proportional to the voltage
across the conductor. This is true for many materials (including metals) provided the
temperature (and other physical factors) remain constant.

Objectives:

At the end of the activity, students should be able to:

1. Predict how current will change when resistance of the circuit is fixed and voltage is varied.
2. Predict how current will change when voltage of the circuit is fixed and resistance is varied.
3. Use graph to show the relationship between current and voltage; current and resistance

Procedure
1. Using the PHET mobile application, set or manipulate the given data given in each table
below to find the current/ voltage/ resistance in a wire. Adjust the voltage and resistance,
and see the current change according to Ohm's law.
2. Record the readings /values obtained for current/voltage/ resistance in the data table.
Note: The value of current is expressed in milliampere (1 Ampere = 1000 milliamperes)
The value of resistance is expressed in Ohm. The value of voltage is expressed in Volts.

Use graph to plot the data shown in the data table

a. current vs. voltage;
b. current vs. resistance
Guide Questions:
1. Using your data table, what happens to current if the values of voltage increase by 1 volt?
It also increase.
2. What happens to the value of current if resistance increases?
The current starts to decrease.
3. How does resistance affect current?
Whenever resistance increase, the current also get increase.
4. With the Resistance slider set at its default value, move the potential slider, observing
what happens to the current? What did you observe between the values of current and
resistance?

When the resistance slider was sets at its default value, every time that the potential slider
of the resistance moves upward the amount of current decreases and if it will move down
the current increases.
Conclusion: the resistance slider sets at its default value, therefore whenever I move down
the potential slider the current got increase then whenever it moves down then it will
decrease, in the other hand it will give opposite reacts whenever it moves up and down.

Application:
1. What do you think is the primary role of resistance in managing the electric current and
voltage in certain circuits? For me resistance are the one who controls the flow of
something that moves, means in electricity it is the one who helps the electric current and
voltage to stop the damages like for example when the voltage give too much power
though the electric current then the circuit will explode, but through the means of
resistance it will be the one to prevent this kind of even to control the energy or voltage
that it gives.
2. Why is it important to consider the electrical and voltage capacity of electrical sources at
home? Because if u put a appliances or equipment that needs an electricity to use and if
the voltage capacity of it are very different to the voltage of your socket the material will
react and explode with the socket, like for sample the appliances in America are very
different for the appliances here in the Philippines the need of voltage that their
appliances need are 100+ while our appliances need more, therefore if we plug their
appliances in our socket which has 200+ voltage the appliances and socket will explode.
