WRITING ASSIGNMENT 2 (2014WRAS2):


ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES ESSAY

BASIC INFO:

• In Writing Assignment 2 (2014WRAS2), you write an advantages and disadvantages


essay on a given topic as explained in the steps below.
• This assignment is 5% of your total grade.
• The 1st draft of the assignment is due on 11 November 2020, Wed, 17.00 (Week 6).
• You will receive feedback from your teacher until 16 November 2020, Mon, 17.00 (Week
7).
• The 2nd draft of the assignment is due on 20 November 2020, Fri, 17.00 (Week 7).
• This assignment will be graded using the Writing Assignment Rubric. The first
draft makes 70% of the final grade and the second draft makes 30% of the final
grade (1st draft 70% + 2nd draft 30% = Final Grade).
• Late submissions will not be accepted.

AIM:
In 2014WRAS2, you will learn how to:

• Write an essay on a given topic.


• Use a good range of vocabulary and grammar with reasonable accuracy.

STEPS:
Write about the following topic. Write at least 250 words.

In the past, most people used to travel to their place of work. With increased use of
computers, the internet and smartphones, more and more people are starting to
work from home.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of this development?

1. Analyse the task by focusing on the topic and task words to ensure that your answer is
relevant.
2. Brainstorm your ideas using mind maps, bullet points etc. and then group your ideas
together.
3. Structure your ideas/essay as follows:

• Introduction (one paragraph: rephrase the question/topic)


• Main body 1 (one or two paragraphs: advantages)
• Main body 2 (one or two paragraphs: disadvantages)
• Conclusion (one paragraph: summary of the main topics and your opinion)
4. Make sure you link your ideas together using the appropriate linking words.
5. In the body paragraphs, support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Search the internet for some statistics and include them in your essay. (Give the links of
the websites you used in the references section at the end of your essay.)
6. Also use your own ideas, knowledge and experience.
7. Include only relevant ideas.
8. Use an appropriate style (neutral/formal). Avoid using informal language.
9. Make use of the strategies in the course book and the Online Module (Writing: Unit 5).
10. Use your own words.
11. Write your essay in a Word document. Put an assignment template at the beginning of the
assignment. Then upload your assignment to the “Writing Assignment 2 (2014WRAS2)
1st Draft Submission” on Ekampüs2 (check Ekampüs2 Öğrenci Rehberi to see how
to hand in a writing assignment).
12. Your teacher will give you feedback in 4-5 days. Download the feedback file and read the
feedback. The teacher will use “New comment” and “Track changes” function in Word to
make comments on your writing and use a list of Writing Feedback Codes. If you have any
questions you can send your teacher (Inst. Seda ATAYGÜL) a message via Ekampüs2.
13. Then you are expected to respond to the feedback and edit your writing. Make the
necessary changes in your original Word file (not in the feedback file) and upload your 2nd
draft to the assignment tab named “Writing Assignment 2 (2014WRAS2) 2nd Draft
Submission” on Ekampüs2 again in Week 7.
