Resistor to Technology

 Resistor is essential in most devices for it facilitates the current flow. Resistors find their
applications in almost every electrical component that we encounter in our everyday life.
They allow only limited or the desired amount of current to pass through the electrical
devices. Hence, they ensure the proper functioning of the devices.

Device that Uses Resistors Picture/ Diagram Explanation on How Resistor

Works on the Device

1. Street Lighting In the evening, the street lights

are automatically turned on, and
they are turned off in the
daytime. This is because
photoresistors, which are
present in them, allow them to
perceive light and darkness. The
circuits for street lights are
developed using this
phenomena, and they
automatically switch on and off
throughout the night and day,
respectively. The resistance of
the photoresistors changes as
the intensity of the light
changes. The photoresistors are
positioned so that elements
other than sunlight, such as car
headlights or bird shadows,
have no impact on how well the
streetlights function.
2. Temperature Sensor The degree of hotness or
coolness of both living and non-
living things is measured using
temperature sensors. Since the
change in body temperature is
exactly proportional to the
change in the diode's resistance,
thermometers are utilized in
temperature sensors because
they can quickly detect even
slight changes in temperature.
When the body temperature is
low, the resistance will also be
low; yet, when the body
temperature is high, the
resistance will also be high. As
a result, the temperature sensor
detects and measures the
resistance and converts it into
electrical impulses that may be
read as temperature units like
Fahrenheit, Celsius, etc.
3. Blower Motor Resistor The fan that maintains the
automobiles' air ventilation
system is powered by a blower
motor. The blower resistor and
blower fan are connected in
series so that the blower motor's
resistance can be changed to
control the current flowing
through it. Blower resistors,
which are made up of many
resistors, are used to regulate
the fan's speed since changing
the resistance results in less
current flowing through the
motor, which lowers the fan's
speed. For the purpose of
controlling each fan speed,
different sized wire-wound
resistors are connected in series
in a variety of blower resistor
construction designs. In other
designs, integrated circuits are
put on the PCB (printed circuit
boards).
4. Fan Speed Controller By turning the knob located on
the circuit board, we may alter
the speed of the ceiling fans. A
potentiometer, often known as a
variable resistor, is connected to
this knob. The resistance values
change as a result of turning the
knob, which alters the electric
current. Consequently, the
potentiometer can be used to
control the fan's speed.
5. Laptops and mobile chargers Many resistors are found in
laptops and mobile chargers
because they regulate the flow
of current and dissipate heat.
Every charger has different
current values written on it,
such as 1 A, 2 A, 500 mA, 700
mA, etc. These readings
indicate the amount of current
that can run through the laptop
or mobile device and how
quickly the charger can charge
the device.
