Electrical Engineering is a field of study which is strongly linked with the development of our

modern society and its needs. Our society increasingly needs more energy with a lower rate of
interruptions and cost is a decisive factor. Therefore, the current electrical system has the
obligation to become an intelligent network with self-healing capabilities. This step can be
achieved through the use of wide area measurement technology in conjunction with
communication systems that allow monitoring the system in real time and thus provide solutions
that improve the operation of the system.
The United States has the best electrical engineering master's programs worldwide. Being the
main reason for my interest in these programs. Among my specific interests are, Power System
Stability, where disturbances and the effects these have on the system and its different variables
are studied. By understanding these phenomena, it is possible to propose measures for their
mitigation and control, allowing the system to operate with a greater degree of reliability. Power
Systems Control and Operation proposes methodologies and processes that allow the system to
operate in an optimal way, minimizing the impacts produced by different events that may arise.
Additionally, all this knowledge is coupled with technology that, through the acquisition of energy
measurement data, allows a comprehensive process of analysis and control of the system to be
carried out.
The vast amount of data obtained by measurement systems integrated into an electrical system,
by themselves, are not enough to help the development and improvement of the system. Tools
capable of translating that data into useful information that can be used by operators are needed.
This is the necessity to have knowledge in Digital Signal Processing and Statistical Machine
Learning, topics that study techniques for the correct adaptation of the signals, creation of
predictive models, data mining, applications that can be implemented in real time for increase the
efficiency in the operation of an electrical system so that it becomes a self-healing smart grid.
A year ago, I had the opportunity to do internships at Petroamazonas, an Ecuadorian oil industry.
During my time working there, I was in charge of analyzing the energy reports of the different
power plants. Based on my analyzes, demand models were developed for the following year, in
addition to a historical record of the last 2 years of all generation units for the planning and
expansion of generation in the company. Throughout my studies, I have carried out several works
where it was necessary to apply data analysis, such as: the feasibility study of a wind and
photovoltaic plant based on wind and solar radiation records, the calculation of generation
potential of a hydroelectric power station based on flow records, among all these works, I would
like to highlight my degree work. This consisted in the development of an application that through
data mining is capable of detecting patterns within the frequency signals of the Ecuadorian
electrical system in order to obtain groups with similar characteristics to each other. Validation
of these groups was included by calculating indices that quantified their quality. I sought to carry
out well-developed work in both the programming and electrical aspects. From these experiences,
I understood the importance of data management and analysis within the industry. However,
without a background or good electrical engineering judgment to back up this work, the results
would mean nothing.
CENACE, Ecuador's Energy Control Center, is a pioneer in South America in energy
management and has chosen to undertake the development of algorithms that optimize the
operation of the system together with synchrophasorial measurement technology. Through the
skills, knowledge and experience that can be obtained via this type of master's program, I would
be an excellent asset in the development of my country by practicing my profession.
