Gerund

A gerund is a word ending in -ing that is formed from a verb and is used as a noun. Simply
put we can

concluded that the Gerund is a verb that "is defined by ending in --Ing.

A. Gerund type

1. Simple Gerunds

The simple gerund is a simple form of the gerund which only uses

one gerund word itself with the pattern "Verb + Ing".

Example:

Typing

Dancing

Cooking

Playing Watching

2. Gerund phrases

We can interpret phrases or phrases as a composition of words

A gerund phrase is a gerund that uses more than one word

The gerund phrase pattern is usually 'Gerund + object'.

Example:

Listening Music

Reading a Novel

Speaking English

Playing Football

your dancing

B. Gerund function

1. Gerund as the Subject

Gerund can be used as a subject in a sentence. Both Simple Gerund and Gerund Phrase can
both be placed in the subject of the sentence

Example:

Listening to music is his hobby. (Listening to music is his hobby.)

Swimming makes me tall. (Swimming makes me tall.) Reading can improve our knowledge.
(Reading can increase knowledge.)

Playing tennis is my new interest. (Playing tennis is my new passion.)

Making a handcraft is fun. (Making a craft is fun.)

2. Gerund as the Predicate Noun

We can place the gerund in the position of the predicate noun in the sentence. And we can

⚫ His main interest is hunting. (His main interest is hunting.) My favorite sport is playing
football, (My favorite sport is playing football)

⚫ His job is making a beautiful handicraft. (Her job is to make a beautiful craft.)

• Her mother's hobby is cooking in the kitchen, (Her mother's hobby is cooking in the
kitchen.)

⚫ Their problem is collecting the money. (Their problem is raising money.)

3. Gerund as the Direct Object

The third function we can place the gerund as a direct object in the sentence.

Example:

⚫ I like singing. (I like to sing.)

My mother loves cooking. (My mother likes to cook.)

They enjoy playing football. (They enjoy playing football.)

⚫ She stops working in the shop. (He quit working at the shop.)

⚫ He starts writing a letter. (He begins to write a letter.)

4. Gerund as the Object of a Preposition In this function, the gerund can be placed as the
object of a preposition. There are several prepositions that can usually be followed by
gerunds, namely at, of, for, in, on, before, after, about, and to.

Example:

am tired of being your girlfriend. (I'm tired of being your girlfriend.) ⚫ Thank you so much
for coming. (Thank you very much for coming.)

We have to finish this task before going home. (We have to finish this task

before putting)

I look forward to meeting you soon. (I'm looking forward to meeting you soon.) I used to
listen to dangdut music. (I used to listen to music a lot

dangdut.)
