MULTIPLE CHOICE

Magnetic field flows from NORTH to SOUTH

Using Right Hand Rule
ELECTRICAL BELL

Explain how electrical bell works!

The switch is pressed and current flows through the circuit. The electromagnet is powered
and generates a magnetic field that attracts the iron strip towards it.

The striker strikes the gong (bell). When the striking arm strikes the gong, the contact is loss
and the current stops flowing through the circuit and causes the electromagnet to lose its
magnetic field. The connected spring arm returns the striker to its original rest position.

The contact is restored and current flows through the circuit (provided the main switch is still
pressed). The process is repeated from the beginning.
A soft iron core is useful when you want an electromagnet switch off rapidly.
If the armature is switched to a steel one, then it would have a slight delay since steel is
a hard type of magnetic metal. It takes a while to magnetize and demagnetize due to its
properties so the striker will hit the bell at even slower rate.

MOTOR DC (RIGHT HANDED RULE)

Look at the image of motor DC below (position A)

Wire AB
Current flows from A to B
Magnetic field flows from North to South (always)
therefore, using right hand rule, force is upward
(wire AB going upward)

Wire CD
Current flows from C to D
Magnetic field flows from North to South (always)
therefore, using right hand rule, force is
downward (wire CD going downward)
Look at the image of motor DC below (position B)

Wire AB
Current flows from A to B
Magnetic field flows from North to South (always)
therefore, using right hand rule, force is downward
(wire AB going downward)

Wire CD
Current flows from C to D
Magnetic field flows from North to South (always)
therefore, using right hand rule, force is upward
(wire CD going upward)
