Mid-Year School-Based In-Service Training

It was February 3, 2022 when the third day of School-Based In-Service training
was conducted. Again, it started at 8:00 o’clock in the morning with the participants from
Canabang Elementary School, kindergarten to grade – six teachers. We have three
facilitators who shared their knowledge about their assigned topic: They were Ms.
Rowelyn R. Debisme, Mr. Benjamin M. Debisme, and Ms. Rowena M. Maligo. The first
facilitator of the said training/seminar was none other than Ms. Rowelyn R. Debisme, a
kinder teacher of the said school.
Before the training/seminar proper began, singing of the nationalistic song
followed by a prayer that was played through a video presentation, asking for the
Guidance of our Almighty Lord throughout the training/seminar. Checking of
participants’ attendance was carefully done. After that, was the presentation of her topic
which is about “Phonemic Awareness.”

At first the participants were asked about how they learned to read in their early
stage, they come up with only one answer and Ma’am Mene said that “I learned to read
using the ABaKaDa booklet” and then Ms. Rowelyn R. Debisme showed a picture of a
reading material known as ABAKADA booklet.

The facilitator tackled the bridging of five elements of reading which are:
phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. It gives
emphasis on how each element connected to each other. And then, the framework of
reading was established according to the column they were belong. She then played a
video about How to Read: What is phonemic awareness?... The video explained why
phonological or phonemic awareness is a crucial factor in developing reading skills at a
young age. Phonology is said to be the study of sounds and refers to the sound
structure of speech. It was a broad term that includes phonemic awareness. There are
eight areas of instruction which phonemic awareness can achieve effectively: isolation,
identify, categorization, blending, segmentation, deletion, addition, and substitution. The
facilitator discussed each areas to be able for the participants to understand better the
topic.

To sum it up each participants noted that phonemic awareness is necessary, but

not sufficient, phoneme awareness can be directly taught, phoneme awareness does
not require extensive teaching time, phoneme awareness should be assess in
kindergarten, and focus majority of instruction on segmenting and blending sounds. And
presented a quote which said “A child who read will be an adult who thinks.” – Proverb
ended the first session on the third day of training/seminar.

The second topic was discussed by Mr. Benjamin M. Debisme, grade – one
teacher his topic was all about “Assessing 21 st Century Skills with Performance Tasks”.

Before he started the discussion he asked the participants “How do you assess your
pupil’s performance?” Many answer arises and the following were given an emphasis:
using rubrics, use guidelines for scoring, and providing summative tests, providing
performance test for output and/or written test. The facilitator clearly stated the learning
target of his topic was to understand the process of performance tasks, differentiate
performance task as to performance assessment, develop rubrics for an effective score
responses, and integrate 21st century skills to performance-based learning.
Upon discussing the topic about Performance Tasks, another question was
raised. What is a performance tasks? To lighten up each mind regarding this matter, the
following answers were given. It was said that it was an assessment to determine pupils
performance through output, a learning activity that demonstrates pupils knowledge
about a particular learning competency and understanding, and performance tasks yield
a tangible product and/or performance that serve as evidence of learning. Mr. Benjamin
M. Debisme continuously discussed the seven general characteristics of a performance
tasks: 1. Performance tasks call for the application of knowledge and skills, not just
recall or recognition; 2. Performance tasks are open-ended and typically do not yield a
single, correct answer; 3. Performance tasks establish novel and authentic contexts for
performance; 4. Performance tasks provide evidence of understanding via transfer; 5.
Performance tasks are multi-faceted; 6. Performance tasks can integrate two or more
subjects as well as 21st century skills; and 7. Performances on open-ended tasks are
evaluated with established criteria and rubrics.
The facilitator viewed a video clip entitled performance-based learning and
assessment. It teaches how career focus on performances and how your pupils prepare
for life outside the school. That shows a 21 st century learners acquired a 21 st century
skills. There are several steps to be followed in creating performance tasks it includes
measuring pupils’ critical-thinking, problem-solving, and written communication skills,
generating rubrics to score the responses, and developing and implementing a viable
scoring process.
Another video was presented by Mr. Benjamin M. Debisme it was all about
scoring rubrics. In the video presented, Sir Luoie discussed the learning assessment
tool which is the rubrics that serve as guide to provide evaluation, justifiable and fair
scoring response to pupils performance that can be written output, skills demonstration
or any form. There are two types of rubrics and these are holistic rubric and analytic
rubric. Each rubric has different function according to its usage.
After the explanation showed a sample rubric was shown to participants for them
to identify what types of rubric they saw. The session ended by providing them an
activity to see to it they learned from the topic being discussed.
