Statement of Purpose for Master's Programme in Renewable Electric Power Systems,

Linnaeus University

I hold a four-year Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Hons) degree from the General
Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Sri Lanka in the field of Electrical & Electronic
Engineering. I graduated with a 2.7 out of 4.2 including both technical and military subject
discipline. I am specialized in the field of Power & Energy Systems and Electronic Systems
during my undergraduate studies. I have published and presented my undergraduate
research works at International Research Symposium 2013, General Sir John Kotelawala
Defence University on “Feasibility Study on Offshore Based Wind Power Installation for Sri
Lanka” and as well as some other technical exhibitions. I did many extra-curricular activities
and social works in my school time and undergraduate period. I am an international and
national decorated sports shooting athlete and as well as a provincial level weightlifter. I hold
memberships at international professional engineering bodies such as IEEE (MIEEE 98455425)
and IET-UK (MIET 1101034715). I am now serving to the 7th battalion of Sri Lanka Electrical &
Mechanical Engineers Regiment as an Officer Commanding at a medium level workshop.

I obtained better results for key modules in Power Engineering such as, Power
systems, Electrical Machines & Drives, Electromagnetism, Power system protection and High
voltage engineering, Electrical installations, Renewable energy & Environment during my
undergraduate degree. I gained theoretical and hands on experience in power systems
condition monitoring, power system control and power system protection during my
undergraduate internship in the leading power system authority “Ceylon Electricity Board” in
Sri Lanka. And also, I am more curious on finding opportunities related to power engineering
and renewable energy. Given these interests, studying under the prestigious Linnaeus
University's experienced panel of professors who are pioneers in science and engineering
areas of study would be stimulating. It’s increased my curiosity and passion for a future career
in the field. So, I think I will be a suitable candidate for the master’s programme in Renewable
Electric Power Systems in Linnaeus University.

Under the Renewable Electric Power Systems master’s programme in Linnaeus

University, I will learn about broad aspects of renewable energy and technologies such as
Hydroelectric Power, Wind Power, Wave Power, Biomass, Solar Energy Technologies,
Batteries and Storage, Generator Design as it’s become an important part of energy
production. Most interestingly this course covers the essential elements of renewable energy,
industrial project management, transform theory and applications, Power distribution grids
analysis, research skills and market operations in power systems which will be much useful as
a professional. I have worked time to time as an Engineer Project Management at power
supply projects which were implemented in Northern Province of Sri Lanka while serving at
SL Army. From that, I gained valuable experience in project management practices and
methodologies. I think it will be useful for my studies as well.
Sweden was chosen as the country to pursue my postgraduate education since it
offers one of the world's finest education systems. Sweden's education system is world class
and studying there would allow me not only to study and expand my knowledge in my chosen
subject, but also to master the complexities of the educational system in order to contribute
to the establishment of a great education sector in Sri Lanka. The Linnaeus University ranked
among top 350 universities in the world and one of the best academic institutions in Sweden
as well as 6th largest one in the country, owing to the high quality and impact of its courses
and research, which made me certain that the academic exposure I will get at Linnaeus will
be the finest of my life.

My career ambition is to be a professional engineer in power engineering and

renewable energy field and introduce new possibilities to upgrade the renewable electricity
generation in Sri Lanka in order to support to overcome country’s prevailing energy
challenges, in my fullest capacity. And to have sound knowledge in fundamentals, theories,
modern technologies, and hand on experiences with practical aspects related to renewable
energy power systems. I feel that completing Master’s in Renewable Electric Power Systems
from the Linnaeus University will enhance my knowledge in the power engineering and
renewable energy sector to assist my country's energy challenges in the future. Therefore, it
is my belief that with my motives and expertise in this field, I will never be denied the
opportunity of pursuing this master’s at the Linnaeus University, which will equip me with a
globally recognised qualification, supporting to reach my academic and professional goals,
successfully.
