EXPERIMENT 4

VARIATION OF VISCOSITY WITH TEMPERATURE AND CONCENTRATION

Introduction
Viscosity is a property of a liquid and is defined as the resistance of a liquid to flow. The purpose
of this experiment was to determine if the temperature of a liquid affects the viscosity of the liquid.

Objectives

1. Determine how temperature affects the viscosity or flow rate of a fluid.

2. Determine if the concentration of a liquid affects its viscosity.
3. To compare the viscosity of liquid at different temperatures.
4. To compare the viscosity of liquid at different concentration.

Materials
Water, liquid soap, honey, pipettes, funnel, Bunsen burner, ring clamp, beaker, heat
plate,

Procedures

Temperature
Room Temperature (60 or 65˚ F)
1. Cover the end of the funnel then fill the funnel with liquid at 10 milliliter mark.
2. Gently remove the cover at the end of the funnel.
3. Observe and time the flow rate of the liquid.

Cold temperature (40˚ F)

1. Cool the liquid at 40˚ F
2. Cover the end of the funnel then fill the funnel with liquid at 10 milliliter mark.
3. Gently remove the cover at the end of the funnel
4. Observe and time the flow rate of the liquid.

Hot temperature (
1. Heat the liquid at 90˚ F.
2. Cover the end of the funnel then fill the funnel with liquid at 10 milliliter mark.
3. Gently remove the cover at the end of the funnel
Observe and time the flow rate of the liquid
