The KWL Chart is an instructional reading strategy that is used to guide students through a lesson. Students begin by

I have questions in my mind like:

I’ve learned that Causal Analysis
seeks to identify and understand
the reasons why things are as
they are and hence enabling
focus of change activity. The
purpose of causal analysis is
trying to find the root cause of a
problem instead of finding the
symptoms. This technique helps
to uncover the facts that lead to a
certain situation. A root cause is
defined as a factor that caused a
nonconformance and should be
permanently eliminated through
process improvement. The root
cause is the core issue—the
highest-level cause—that sets in
motion the entire cause-and-
effect reaction that ultimately
leads to the problems.

confines of your house. When was it? Where did you go? How long were you out? Why did you

A. According to the first sentence of the entire selection, what is the main situation or
phenomenon Conrado de Quiros talks about?

The main situation that Conrado de Quiros talks about in the first sentence of
Bracing for Balikbayans is all about how working outside of the country can change a person.
Some balikbayans are indeed loud and repulsive upon returning here in the Philippines. When
the balikbayans go home from abroad, the relatives usually set up a grand feast to welcome
the arrival of their loved one. Balikbayans going home with all the big baggage, sunglasses,
jackets and everything that is being brought from the country they are from, letting their
relatives see how lucky it is and making them feel that going abroad is the only way you can
get rich.

B. What is the root cause of this phenomenon?

The root cause of this phenomenon is that the balikbayans became proud of himself
that he tend to unconsciously boast too much of the success he got as he went abroad. There
are also factors that can be the root cause of this such as the many changes that happen for
someone that has worked outside of the country and they must conform to the culture and
system of the place where they are employed. They must adjust and be flexible in order to
become more acquainted with the family or company for which they work. I suppose that the
most repulsive among the balikbayans tend to stand out in the crowd of ordinary returnees.

1. What are the possible immediate and remote causes?

The possible remote cause is when the person decided to go work abroad and
become an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) while the possible immediate cause is when
that person plans to go back home here in the Philippines.

2. What are the effects of this phenomenon? Identify which are the primary effects, the
possible immediate effects, and also the remote effects.

I can say that the primary effect of this phenomenon is the changes that has
happened to the person who went abroad to work as an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW).
The remote effect would probably be the adoption of the culture and system that the person
got used to in the working place and if that person still adopt the culture and system abroad
here in the Philippines like wearing of designer brand clothing and fashion, I can consider it
as an immediate effect.

D. How are the following compared and contrasted in the essay?

1. Balikbayans from the United States and Filipinos living in the Philippines.

Balikbayans from the United States wants to impress their family and friends that
lives here in the Philippines by having big baggages full of pasalubongs. In terms of drivers,
America has drivers who follow the traffic rules while Filipino drivers are maniacs.
Moreover, being loud here in the Philippines means that you express your freedom but in
America, they consider it a poor taste. Filipinos are also well-known for wearing signature
clothes unlike Americans.

2. Balikbayans' perceptions of life in the United States and life in the Philippines

Balikbayans’ perception of life in the United States is indeed difficult because they
must face different challenges aside from leaving their families in the Philippines to have a
better future. Some of those challenges they encounter are communication, finances and
life and work environment. They must work hard to provide the needs of their families in the
Philippines. But life if they would stay here in the Philippines is way more difficult because
they will all starve to death. The hard work yet low income jobs in the Philippines is not
enough to sustain the daily needs of their family. Choosing to get paid with dollars per hour
of working is really more practical than getting paid with Philippine peso.

E. What is the author's tone in the essay? What do you think is his purpose for using such?

Conrado de Quiros uses a subjective tone in his essay “Bracing for Balikbayans”.
He used words that describe feelings and opinions about the Balikbayans. The details that are
written in the essay include experiences and thoughts of both the Balikbayans and the
Filipinos living in the Philippines, specifically the changes of attitude.

F. What are the problems that the lack of any sense of nationhood pose? Is there a problem with
migration? Explain you answer.

Filipinos were enticed to move to the States for greater opportunities. When they
adopt a new culture that they boast about, the virtue of nationalism change. Migration is really
okay especially if you are concerned with the labor standards, unemployment and the overall
health of a country's' economy. The pull factors that you can consider include higher wages,
better employment opportunities, a higher standard of living and educational opportunities.
The general reality of the essay is that people will change their minds on what they acquire,
but at
 the end of the day they will ultimately look for a place to call home. It educates people's minds
about their differences from what they idolize and how they think about themselves as
Filipinos. It's an opportunity for us to embrace our nationalism and be content with what we
don't have.

G. What are some solutions that you can propose to address the issue of Filipino migration
particularly to the United States?

Since we all know that people migrate because of broad variety of reasons including
the search for better economic or educational opportunities, the desire for family reunification,
climate change or disasters and many more, the government should focus on making these
fields better for the Filipino people. Countries should promote stability, education and
employment opportunities and reduce the drivers of forced migration, including by promoting
resilience, thereby enabling individuals to make the choice between staying or migrating.

B. Consider this quotation from the essay: "Most of us are expatriates right here in our own land.
America is our heartland whether we get to go there or not.” One way of interpreting this line is
that even though most of us are not balikbayans, we are foreigners in our own country. We take
for granted what is inherently Filipino because our minds have been conditioned to give
privilege to what our colonizers have brought to this country. This is the issue of colonial
mentality. This is the mindset that we inherited from our ancestors who lived during the Spanish,
American, and Japanese colonization of the Philippines. It explains why most Filipinos
unconsciously choose the culture of those who colonized us rather than what is native to us.

Browse through travel sites on the Internet. Look at pictures of places and travel fare deals that
these sites advertise. Given a chance to spend a vacation, would you choose to go somewhere
local or abroad? Why this choice of travel destination? Write a 1-page essay detailing how you
as a Filipino have imbibed colonial mentality and how it has affected your travelling experience.

“Out of the Water”

As a person being born here in the Philippines, I am proud to call myself a
young Filipina. With Filipino blood running inside my veins, I am indeed blessed enough
to have a Filipino family that I can call home. But with the influence of the social media
and the internet, I've had a hard time seeing signs of colonial mindset in myself. The
mentality is so ingrained in my head that I don't even know I'm doing it. Well, let me
share to you some of the things I’ve noticed about myself during the pandemic.

To see the wonderful talents and skills that Filipino people possess is such
an amazing feeling, most especially in the field of manufacturing local products which I
can see along the highways when we travel here in Mindanao and even online. But
unknowingly, I had unintentionally adopted a colonial mentality, especially in terms of
the products and brands that I normally purchase in the market. The apps of designer
brands have now been accessible to people’s technology. With one tap, I can already
purchase lots of shopping bags being delivered door-to-door in our house. I cannot
really deny the fact that for me, imported goods have always seemed to be superior to
Philippine-made goods for they are more technologically advanced. They are
wonderfully and strongly made with authentic materials and can really last longer
compared to local products.

It has also occurred to me that English speakers are more knowledgeable to

converse with. Although I am a Bisaya since birth and up until now, hearing the accent
of English people really feels so therapeutic. I would rather choose to talk with them all
day than hear the talks of my Filipino acquaintances. They are more open-minded and
 mature

to talk with. I even wonder why Filipinos aren’t like that at all when I converse with them.
Foreign people really know what exact words to use in replying a message and I think
that what makes it more incredible.

I am also guilty of wanting to have a body like Hollywood or Western fashion,

especially promiscuous fashion like Kylie Jenner. But I simultaneously think indigenous
people wearing G-strings or being topless are indecent, antiquated, and backwards.
Seeing the Western fashion is just so aesthetic and I really aim to have a fashion like
that. That’s the reason why I order designer clothes and other fashion stuff online to
somewhat be like them in terms of fashion.

I lost my nationalistic spirit at some point. This had an impact on my thinking,

especially when it comes to my travel plans. Rather than finding adventure in the
Philippines, I confessed that I desired to travel to other countries. Not to mention the
majestic views and buildings they have, foreign countries really have a super neat and
clean place. There are many things that the other countries does better than my
country. The quirky innovations, intriguing culture and architectural masterpieces play a
part in attracting hoards of travelers to discover the foreign countries and I am one of
that.

But at the end of the day, I’ve come to realize that whatever I do I am still a
Filipina and as a true Filipina, I should decolonize; reimagine something beyond the
current world I live in. It’s about challenging myself to dismantle what the internet of
generations of colonial expansion and Western exceptionalism have taught me as
“better, more beautiful, more refined, etc.” It’s no wonder that I haven’t realized why I
think the way I think nor act the way I act. Some say, “It’s easier to swim with the
current than fight against it” and in order to reframe my thinking and change my
perspective, I must first understand what I am decolonizing from.

When I challenge colonial mentality, I begin to accept and embrace myself

for who I truly am. I start to put aside shame and celebrate where I have come from. It’s
time for me to jump out of the water. It’s time to embrace being a Filipina.

No, I do not agree to the statement above for the reason that it is a fact that Causal Analysis
mainly tackles about both the causes and effects of a particular event, phenomenon, or
situation.

√ B. The logical fallacy of faulty causality is present in the Filipino concept of the
anting-anting.

Yes, I do agree that the Filipino concept of anting-anting is a logical fallacy of faulty causality
because having an anting-anting means you have a luck charm and it is also considered as a
belief by the elders. The concept of anting-anting here in the Philippines hasn't been statistically
proven that it really brings good luck to whoever has it. As a result, when an individual fails or
completes a test and attributes it entirely to the lucky charm, it is faulty causality.
 √ C. Causal Analysis can be translated into this diagram: CAUSE/S ←
SITUATION → EFFECT/S; in which causes always happen before the
situation - that is, the topic of a paper - and the effects always after the
situation.

Yes, I do agree that Causal Analysis has a diagram like this – CAUSE/S ← SITUATION →
EFFECT/S because the cause always takes place before the effect: Something happens, which
leads to a result. But the cause and effect don't have to be presented in time order in the
passage. The effect may be presented first, even though the cause occurred earlier.

√ D. Since a proposal is suggesting the possibility of solving a problem by giving

solutions, proposals are largely speculative by purpose.

Yes, I do agree to the statement being written above because a proposal is a document that is
being prepared to persuade the prospect to adopt the solution to a problem or the fulfillment of a
need proffered in the proposal. In simple words, the main purpose of a proposal is to convince
the readers that the writer's solution is the best way of solving the problem. It is speculative for
the reason that it is only based on conjecture rather than knowledge.

√ E. To solve any issue or problem, one must always identify first the root cause.

Yes, I do agree that to solve any issue or problem, one must always identify first the root cause
because it is almost certainly necessary to identify the source of the problem before seeking a
solution; otherwise, a solution is unlikely to be identified. To build a solution, we must
troubleshoot the root cause and identify the mechanism. Discovering the root causes of
problems is really a must to identify appropriate solutions of any problem.
