Introduction
I attend an institution that doesn’t give us the freedom to leave the compound during our breaks and due to

these fact students are only allowed to buy their meals from the school`s lunchroom. Many times, it is noted

that a few students of Pallotti High School are arriving late to classes. This then leads to teachers

complaining about the students missing out on their class sessions. Students then fault it on the fact that they

spend half their lunch break waiting in line for their foods. For this reason, this experiment is being carried

out to determine if the waiting time for service is accurate as it is being reported.

Method of Data Collection
The surveys were conducted in Belize City, Belize. On the Campus of Pallotti High School.

Student were randomly selected from each year group from forms 1 to 4. This gave an estimate

of around forty (42) student for the purpose of this research. The data were generated by directly

observing and recording the time taken to be services.

 Permission was asked to survey the student during their lunch break.

 After the permission was granted students were then timed using a stop watch.

 The student’s arrival time and time which they were called to receive service was

recorded.

Analysis of Data
The data congregated and placed into a bar graph and cumulative frequency curve shows that

over the period of 60 minutes’ students spent between one (1) to ten (10) minutes to be served in

line at the lunch room. The mean waiting time of 3 minutes and the median time of 2 minutes

suggest that many students from the sample waited for more than three minutes. The frequency

charts both show that more students spent 1 minute in line to get service and little to no students

took 10 minutes to be served. The number of students gradually decreased between 1 to 3

minutes and then dropped at 4 minutes, more students took 5 minutes to be serviced after the

time students took in the lunch room decreased.

Discussion of Finding
I came to know that the time for the students to arrive to class at an acceptable time after the

lunch break has been over is not possible with the amount of students that is currently attending

this institution. The data makes known that the mean waiting time for service at the school’s

lunchroom is 3 minutes and the median waiting time is 2 minutes. Pallotti High Schools lunch

break is 55 minutes long and many students said that it takes them an average of 20 minutes to

consume their lunch. Our school’s lunchroom has three windows that are available to students to

order their food, and approximately three lunchroom servers. Based on the calculation roughly

55 students could be served in the span of 55 minutes. Proving that this is not enough time for

400 students that attend this institution if they choose to purchase food from the lunchroom.

There are many steps the institution can take to ensure that the span of time students spend

waiting for service at the school’s lunchroom is not slow. For instance, having a cashier that

deals with the money and having more workers in the lunchroom to serve the students would

improve the waiting time.

Conclusion

11 | P a g e
The aim of this investigative project was to investigate the duration of time that students spend

waiting for services at the school`s lunchroom. The average mean time a student spends waiting

in line to be serviced in the school lunchroom is 3 minutes. Therefore, we can conclude that the

span of time that students spent waiting in line for service at the school’s lunchroom is not

enough for a large number of students to purchase their food.
