Learning
Competency S10FE-Iii-53

1. Build and use an electromagnet.

2. Explain how electromagnets work.
Objectives 3. Discuss the ways on how to change the strength of the
electromagnet.
4. Enumerate some of the uses of electromagnet in our everyday life.

Then, show a magnet and let them observe what it can do to some
magnetic and non –magnetic objects and to another magnet.
ENGAGE (Get the students’ minds focused on the topic )
For the unlocking of terms to be used, use the Mirrors on/Mirrors off  Chalk
strategy.  Board
Below are the terms that need to be defined

A. Magnetic field
B. Magnetic induction
C. Electromagnet
After that, proceed to the showing of a video clip which uses an
electromagnet crane to separate the metallic scraps from the non metallic
scraps in a junkyard.
EXPLORE (Provide students with a common experience)
 Worksheets
Group the students into five. 
Let them build an electromagnet and explore its strength.
Provide them with the needed materials.
( See Attached Activity sheet and Rubrics).

EXPLAIN (Teach the concept. Should include interaction between teacher

and students)
 Processing
 Discuss the ways on how the strength of the electromagnet can
be changed.
 Explain how it works.
ELABORATE (Students apply the information)
Teacher’s Input.(10 minutes) tH

Go back to the video shown during the Engage Part.

Discuss how the electromagnetic crane is able to separate the
metallic scraps from the non metallic scraps in a junkyard.
Using PHET Interactive Simulation, show how the magnetic
field strength of an electromagnet change as some factors
that affect it strength is manipulated.
Then, enumerate some of the uses of electromagnets in everyday
life.

EVALUATE (How will you know the students have learned the concept)
Formative assessment(5 minutes):
1. See Evaluation Sheet Attached. 5 ITEM MULTIPLE CHOICE
EXTEND (Deepen conceptual understanding through use in new context
Very large electromagnets are also being used in Germany and Japan to lift
and drive trains called maglev trains. Maglev trains have no wheels. Instead,
they use magnets to run above special rails The magnets actually lift the
train above the rails Because the train is not actually touching the rails, there
is no friction. With no friction, the train runs smoothly and very fast, up to
500 km/h.
Research on how maglev trains work . Put in one whole sheet of bond paper.
