risk, and no culture of reading. The results are also the same in the
study of Cabardo (2015) where in it was revealed that majority of the
students belonged to frustration level of reading proficiency in silent
reading while in instructional level for the oral reading in which
majority of the males are less proficient in reading compared to
females in both silent and oral reading.
In line with the DepEd Memorandum 173, s. 2019 entitled
“Hamon:Bawat Bata Bumabasa”, and Regional Memorandum 310,
s.2022, also known as Intensifying Reading Recovery Plan to Address
Learning Gaps, a Reading Enhancement Program for all grade levels of
Bambang National High School entitled “Project HERO” (Helping Every
Readers Overcome Obstacles) will be implemented to address the
learning gaps and low performance in reading brought about by the
instructional disruption covered by COVID-19.
As a result in the Pre-Test Examination from Grade 7-10 level
under Oral Recognition, Frustration Level has a total of 1,007
students, Instructional Level has a total of 949 students, and
Independent Level has a total of 1,126 students.
In the Reading Comprehension of Grade 7-10 level, Frustration
Level has a total of 1, 134 students, Instructional Level has a total of
1, 267 students and Independent Level has a total of 673 students.
The Reading Level of Grade 7-10 level, Frustration level has a
total of 1.155 students, Instructional Level has a total of 893 students
and Independent Level has a total number of 1,034 students.
Objectives
This learning action cell aims:
a. General
Acquainting the students with reading comprehension strategies
and skills that facilitate their understanding and analyzing of written
texts effectively and easily and further developing the student’s basic
skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
b. Specific
For Teachers:
1. capacitate teachers to become effective and efficient reading teachers;
2. produce reading intervention materials across reading levels of
learners; and
3. nurture a culture of reading in the school and community through the
implementation of Project HERO.
For Students:
1. Provide opportunities for students to read, write, and talk about
written texts;
2. Read texts repeatedly to support fluency;
3. Teach children the tools to figure out words they don’t know;
4. Provide time for studying spoken language, including vocabulary
and spelling; and
5. Use prior knowledge to make connections.
