Sustainable Development Goal 15 is about "Life on land." United Nations has established

17 Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, the official wording is: "Protect, restore and promote

sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and

halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss”. The Goal has 12 targets to be

achieved by 2030. There are 14 indicators will be measured in progression toward the targets.

Being a student or young adult is not a reason to ignore the responsibilities towards the

earth instead they are the one that should concern about that because it can affect their future.

Learning SDG had me ponder deeply the important of taking care the land. In addition, as a Muslim

we are vicegerent in this world which Allah put some responsibilities on us which include taking

care of the land. First thing that I have been practicing and that actually fit the SDG goal is do not

waste the energy. Wasting energy can bring many negative effects to the environment either. As

nowadays, we depend on many of the energy sources like coal and natural gas and they cannot be

replaced once we used them up they will go forever. Another problem is that most forms of energy

can cause pollution. In addition, overusing or wasting energy also cause a natural consequence like

it will cost you. This can come in the form of fuel and energy bills and you will be paying more

without an appreciable return on your investment. You may also risk lowering the expected

lifespan of appliances and other electronics. Furthermore, in Islam wasting is an act that is

abhorred, Allah mentioned in the Quran:

“And render to the kindred their due rights, as (also) to those in want, and to the wayfarer;

but squander not in the manner of a spendthrift. Verily spendthrifts are brothers of Satan;

and Satan is to his Lord (himself) ungrateful.” (Holy Quran, verses 26-27)
Besides of using the energy wisely, I do also avoid using plastic. For instance, I always

ask the seller to not give me a plastic if it does not really a need as long as my hand is enough to

hold the items. Basically I also prefer to bring my own food container instead of using the

disposable plastic container. Imagine that all students could do the same thing, surely it will give

a great impact to the environment and reduce a lot of plastic use. Moreover, recycling paper,

mineral bottle, boxes is some of some good ways for a student in order to save the environment.

In addition, supporting a company that protect the environment by reducing waste, preventing

pollution, adopting clean energy, using sustainable materials and making their product sustainable

is nice practice to start. In summary, I would say most of the SDG goals have similarities as in

Islamic objectives. Thus, as a human with a common sense, we should think rationally before

doing something. Lack of attention and responsibilities towards surrounding could lead to many

consequences that will affected all either human or any other creatures.
