Gas Arc Welding Notes

safety glasses, welding helmet, welding jacket, welding gloves, jeans or work
Safety Equipment- what to wear?
pants, leather boots or sturdy shoes without visible seams
What number for shade minimum when welding? 10

MIG- GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) is the official name of the process, but it is often still referred to by some of
its older names: MIG- which stands for metal inert gas

TIG- Tungsten inert gas

Why Copper in filler to keep the filler wire from rusting

Types of welding materials Aluminum, copper, magnesium, nickel, stainless steel, steel (carbon), titanium

Balance of voltage and amperage, because if one or the other

GMAW uses constant (type of power) and why?
is set too high or too low, then poor penetration can result.

Polarity for MIG

DCEP / DCEN • GMAW almost always uses DCEP. Direct Current Electrode Positive.
• This means that the electrode (gun) is the positive side and the workpiece is the negative.

How shielding gas works

Shielding gasses provide higher welding speed, better penetration, and good mechanical
properties, and can increase heat.

Types of gases • Carbon Dioxide: is a compound made up of one carbon atom (C) and two oxygen atoms
(O2). 100% CO2 is widely used and provides higher welding speed, better penetration,
and good mechanical properties.
• Nitrogen: (N) It is not an inert gas but is relatively non-reactive to the molten weld pool.
Used in blends to increase heat.
• Most common shielding gas blend is 75% Argon + 25% CO2

Patterns Welders use a variety of weave patterns. Some are better for certain types of
welding, certain metals, and certain positions.

We will use the "C" pattern

Gas Arc Welding Notes

• This is the angle of the gun in relation

Gun Angle to the workpiece.
• The arc force can be used to
counteract the gravitational force on
the molten weld pool.

Name three purposes of shielding gas in the electrode wire. Higher welding speed, better penetration, and increased heat

The numbers on the electrode refer to its thickness. Common

What do the numbers on the electrode mean? (.035 for example) sizes are: .023, .030, .035, .045, and 1/16"

Why should you warn people around you before you strike an arc? yell "cover"

In the our welding shop, the recommended Shielding pressure should set at ____ 30 psi.
