INTRODUCTION
First Aid is an integral part of an effective HSE
management system.
WHAT IS FIRST AID?
The word ‘first aid’ was first from coined the
term "erste hilfe" (translating to 'first aid') by a
Prussian military surgeon Friedrich von
Esmarch , in 1870.
• FIRST AID is a skilled
application of accepted
principle of treatment or
immediate help given to a
sick or injured person until
full medical treatment is
available.

What is not First Aid?

• First aid is not full professional medical


treatment and cannot be compared with
what a trained medical professional
provides.
• It involves making common sense
decisions in best interest of an injured
person.
AIMS OF FIRST AID
The goals of first aid is summarized
with the acronym of “PAPP”.
•Preserve life and minimize

the threat of death

•Prevent deterioration and

worsening of the situation.

•Promote recovery process


SCOPE OF FIRST AID

This involves the operations of first


aid.
• Diagnosis
• Identification and saying in simple terms what
the problem of the victim e.g no breathing,
unconsciousness, etc.

• Treatment
• All measures taken to preserve the lives of the
victim and prevent the situation from getting
worst.

• Evacuation
• All procedures laid down for transportation of
casualties.
PRIORITIES OF FIRST
AID
This involves the important things to
note in administering first aid.
❑Assess a situation quickly and calmly
❑Protect yourself and any casualties from danger –
never put yourself at risk
❑prevent cross infection between yourself and the
casualty as far as possible.
❑Comfort and reassure casualties at all times
❑Assessing the casualty: identify, as far as you can,
the injury or nature of illness affecting a casualty
❑Give early treatment, and treat the casualties with
the most serious life threatening conditions first.
❑Arrange for appropriate help.
A FIRST AIDER
IN A WORKPLACE, HE IS A FIRST AID PROVIDER.
• A first aider is not necessarily a
doctor,
nurse, or anyone related to the
medical field but an individual
who has been professional trained
and certified to take care of the
injured and sick people in
emergency cases until full
medical treatment is available.

Your attitude as a first aid is also key in
administering first aid.
• Calculative – Quick response in thinking and
action
• Courageous – Not fearful
• Calm – gentle and humble
• Comforting – consoling
• Courteous – Kind and kind words
• Competent – Skillful in applying first aid skills
• Communicative – good communication skills
• Careful – Safety conscious
• Compassionate – show empathy
• Confidence – be sure of what to do and not be
confused
RESPONSIBILITIES OF A
FIRST AIDER
This will be dependent on specific workplace
requirements, these could include:
▪ In charge of first aid training
▪ Ensuring the first aid equipment is fit for purpose
▪ Scene survey
▪ Ensuring the scene is safe
▪ Assessing the casualty
▪ Contacting the emergency services
▪ Prioritising the treatment of casualties
▪ Clearing up after an incident
▪ Incident reporting and documentation
FIRST AID KIT
This is the main tool of first aid administration.
•A first aid kit is a
collection of supplies
and equipment that
is used to give
immediate medical
treatment.
BASIC SKILLS
OF FIRST AID
First aid treats the ABCs as the foundation of good
treatment which are Airway, Breathing and
Circulation.

• Scene Survey - Primary And Secondary Survey


• Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation – CPR
• Automated external defibrillator – AED
• Heimlich Maneuver
• RICE Treatment
• Bandaging
• Evacuation

The scene survey should be conducted in


the following way:

▪ Look for potential hazards
▪ Assess the situation
▪ Protect and prioritise
