LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 11 MATHEMATICS (CORE SUBJECT)

GENERAL MATHEMATICS

CONTENT: Functions and Their Graphs

CONTENT STANDARDS: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of rational

function.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: The learner is able to accurately formulate and solve real-life
problems involving rational functions.

LEARNING COMPETENCY: The learner determines the:

(a) intercepts
(b) zeroes; and
(c) asymptotes of rational functions. (M11GM-Ic-1)

x + x−2
3. f ( x )= 2
x +x −12

b. Motivation
AM I RATIONAL?

Unscramble the letters of the following to form mathematical terms related

to rational functions.

1. IZHROTNOLA MYSAEPOTT
2. RTLAVECI MYSAEPOTT
3. PETENIRCST
4. ROZESE

As a human being, how will you show and prove to others that you are
a rational creature? Cite an example.

c. Activity

The class will be divided into 3 groups considering the different multi-
intelligences of the students (NUMBER, WORD and BODY SMART). Reporting
will be done after the discussion of the answers with group members. A
rubric will be used in rating the learners’ output.

Determine the x and y intercepts, zeroes and asymptotes (horizontal

and vertical) of the following rational functions.

2 x 2−x +2
1. f ( x )= (NUMBER SMART)
x 2−4

x+ 9
2. f ( x )= 2 (WORD SMART)
x −x 42

2 x 2−2 x +1
3. f ( x )= (BODY SMART)
x−3

RUBRIC:

No Criteria Points
.
1 Accuracy (correctness of answers) 10
2 Logical Reasoning (delivery of report, manner of answering 10
students’ queries)
Total 20

d. Analysis
1. What are the factors of the numerator? denominator?

2. How did you solve the x and y intercepts and zeroes of the function?
3. What are the steps in finding the horizontal and vertical asymptotes?
4. How did you find the activity?
5. What are your strategies and techniques to arrive with your answer?
e. Abstraction

The following steps will be helpful when determining the intercepts, zeroes
and asymptotes of rational functions.

a) To find the x-intercept, set y=0 and solve for x.

To find the y-intercept, set x=0 and solve for y

b.) The zeroes of the numerator are the x-intercepts of the graph of the
given rational function.

The zeroes of the denominator (not in the domain of the function)

determines the vertical asymptote.

c.) To find the horizontal asymptote, equate the numerator to zero.

g(x )
If f ( x )= , then there are three possible cases.
h (x)
1. If the degree of the denominator h(x) is greater than the
numerator g(x), then the line y = 0 or the x-axis is the horizontal
asymptote.
2. If the degree of the numerator is equal to the degree of the
denominator, the horizontal asymptote is the quotient of the
leading coefficients (coefficient of the term containing the highest
degree) of the numerators.
3. If the degree of the numerator is one more than the numerator,
the graph will have an oblique asymptote.

To find the vertical asymptote equate the denominator to zero.

f. Application
The class will be divided into 3 groups: NUMBER, WORD and BODY SMART.
Each group is task to present their output to the class creatively. A certain rubric
will be used in rating the learners’ output.

Determine the x and y intercepts, zeroes and asymptotes (horizontal and

vertical) of the following rational functions.

x−1
1. f ( x )= (NUMBER SMART)
x 2−4

5 x +15
2. 2. f ( x )= (WORD SMART)
3 x +5

x 2 +8 x−20
3. 3. f ( x )= (BODY SMART)
x+ 3
