Title of The Experiment: Shear Test.

TITLE OF THE EXPERIMENT

Shear Test

Aim: conduct shear test and find shear strength of the material

Test Description
Shear test is used for testing rivets, screws, pins and parallel keys in order to find out the
shear strength of the material or its behavior under shear strain.
External shear force is applied on the specimen to create shear stresses in the specimen
until specimen shear off.
Material shows resistance against the shear stress induced in it and can be understand by
two methods
1. Single shear testing method : In this testing method specimen shear off at one
cross section

2. Double shear testing method: In this testing method specimen shear off at two
cross section.

Test Objectives:
1. Shear tests with metallic specimens (Copper)
2. Calculate shear strength

Specimen Details:
Specimens Material: copper
Diameter of the specimen: 6mm
Length of the specimen: 26mm
Test Apparatus:
1. WP300 ( Gunt Hamburg) table top model
2. Shear testing accessory for WP300( Gunt Hamburg)
Test Procedure:

The Shear device consists of two hardened shearing anvils that hold the specimen and a
pull strap with a hardened shear tongue.

The resulting shear device is installed in the compression area of

the WP 300 experimental unit, between bottom crossbar and crosshead.

The tongue engages between the two shearing anvils without play.

Here the specimen shears off in two cross-sections. Bending stress that distorts the results
is largely avoided.

External shear forces acting on the specimen produce shear stress in the shear specimen
and the resistance of the material to shear stress is determined.

The shear strength determined in the shear test is important in the design of bolts, rivets
and pins, as well as for calculating the force required for shears and presses.
