Carbohydrates are as important as proteins because they are the main source of energy. The body
needs energy to do its work. Carbohydrates are found in flour, bread, cakes, rice, potatoes, cassava,
corn, sugar and sweets.
Fats are another important source of energy. We can find fats in butter, marga-rine, milk, coconut-
milk, egg, fish, meat and ice-cream. However, too much fat can make our body fat, and this is dangerous
for our heart. It can cause heart attacks. Mineral salts such as calcium, magne- sium, phosphorus, and
iron are also absolutely necessary for our body. For instance, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus are
necessary for the growth of our bones and teeth. Iron is important for our blood. Vitamins are also

Text 24
Sequoyah was a young Cherokee Indian, the son of a white trader and an Indian woman. At an early age,
he became amazed by "the talking leaf," an expression he used to describe the white man's written
records. Although many people believed this "talking leaf" to be a present from the Great Spirit,
Sequoyah rejected to accept that theory. Like other Indians of the period, he was illiterate, but his
determination to cure the situation led to the invention of a unique 86-character alphabet based on the
sound patterns he heard.
His family and friends thought him crazy, but while recuperating from a hunting accident, he
independently set out to create a form of communication for his own people as well as for other
Indians. In 1821, after twelve years of work, he had successfully developed a written language enabling
thousands of Indians to read and write.
Sequoyah's intention to preserve words and events for later generations has caused him to be
remembered among the important inventors. The giant redwood trees of California, called "sequoias" in
his honor, will further imprint his name in history.
