➢ two points, or
➢ graph.

 EXPLORE
Let’s Recall!

Key Concepts

Slope
Slope (𝑚) is the 'steepness' of a line. It is also commonly known as rise over run.

Slope of a Line
The slope of a line is given by

𝑟𝑢𝑛

If the coordinates of two points on a line are (𝑋1, 𝑌1) and (𝑋2, 𝑌2), the slope can be determined by
𝑦2 − 𝑦1
𝑥2 − 𝑥1

Illustrative Examples
A. Find the slope of the given line.
1. Solutions:
a. count the rise, or the vertical distance between the two points

Thus, 𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒆 = 𝟔 since

the points are 6 units
apart vertically.

It is positive since the

direction is upwards

4|LINEAREQUATIONSINTWOVARIABLES
b. count the run, or the horizontal distance between the two points

Thus, 𝒓𝒖𝒏 = 𝟑 since the

points are 3 units apart
horizontally.

It is positive since the

direction is to the right.

c. therefore, the slope is

6
𝑚= =𝟐
3

2. Solutions:
a. count the rise, or the vertical distance between the two points

Thus, 𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒆 = 𝟒 since

the points are 4 units
apart vertically.

It is positive since the

direction is upwards

b. count the run, or the horizontal distance between the two points

Thus, 𝒓𝒖𝒏 = −𝟑 since

the points are 3 units
apart horizontally.

It is ngeative since the

direction is to the left.

c. therefore, the slope is

4 𝟒
𝑚= =−
−3 𝟑

3. Solutions:
a. count the rise, or the vertical distance between the two points

Thus, 𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒆 = 𝟎 since

there is no vertical
distance between the
two points.

b. count the run, or the horizontal distance between the two points

Thus, 𝒓𝒖𝒏 = 𝟓 since the

points are 𝟓 units apart
horizontally.

It is positive since the

direction is to the right

c. therefore, the slope is

0
=𝟎 𝑚=

5|LINEAREQUATIONSINTWOVARIABLES
4. Solutions:
a. count the rise, or the vertical distance between the two points

Thus, 𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒆 = 𝟓 since

the points are 5 units
apart vertically.

It is positive since the

direction is upwards

b. count the run, or the horizontal distance between the two points

Thus, 𝒓𝒖𝒏 = 𝟎 since

there is no vertical
distance between the
two points.

c. therefore, the slope is

5
𝑚= = 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅
0

QUESTIONS TO PONDER:
 How would you describe the slope if the graph:
➢ increases from left to right?
➢ decreases from left to right?
➢ is a horizontal line?
➢ is a vertical line?

B. Find the slope of the line that passes through the following points:
1. (𝟒, 𝟓) and (𝟐, 𝟏)

Solutions:

−2 − 4 −6 −𝟑
𝑚= = =
1 − (−3) 4 𝟐
3. (−𝟐, 𝟑) and (𝟑, 𝟑)
Solutions:
3−3 0

𝑚= = =𝟎
3 − (−2) 5
4. (𝟐, −𝟐) and (𝟐, 𝟑)
Solutions:

3 − (−2) 5
𝑚= = = 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅
2−2 0
