Rain forest are the oldest major ecosystem, having survived climate

changes for more than one million years. They provide habitats for more
species of plants, animals, insects and birds than any other environment
found on our planet. Scientists estimate that between 60 and 90 per cent
of all species of life are to be found in rain forests. Unfortunately, the
widespread destruction of many of the world's rain forests has caused a
significant decline in the number of plant and animal species on Earth.

Nearly 50 per cent of the world's food supplies originate in rainforest areas.
Items that we commonly buy from the supermarket, such as bananas, pineapples,
mangoes, peanuts, macadamia nuts and cashews, all originated in rainforests.
Many popular foods like rice, corn and maize also come from the rainforests, as
do tea, coffee, cocoa and sugar.

Illegal logging eradication has been one of the nine priorities of the
Joko Widodo administration known as Nawacita as well as a
strategic goal of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in their
2015-2019 Strategic Plan (Renstra).
After forest walking the horizon extends into the green pastures. In the middle of the
meadow hay bales with yummy local delicacies are waiting for us (crackling and
onion potica, buckwheat bread with nuts, cheeses, dried fruit). All the delights are
deriving from nearby small scale family farms. The untouched forest is welcoming us
again.

While we could go on about the ethereal glow and seemingly endless heights of
this bamboo grove on the outskirts of Kyoto, the sight's pleasures extend beyond
the visual realm. If you close your eyes, tune out tourists, and listen to the wind
—wood creaking, leaves rustling—you'll experience sensory overload.

Roughly the size of Ireland and home to hundreds of animal species (including
rare wolves and whales), the Great Bear Rainforest is one of the most bio-
diverse places on the planet. And with its scattering of fjords, waterfalls, massive
cedar trees, and 4,000-foot granite cliffs, it's also one of the most beautiful.
In conclusion, the five indicative regions show a trend that illegal
logging is not the pioneer in the area but resulted from the expansion
of ongoing activities. These regions are indicated to be at risk of
experiencing encroachment into the surrounding forests.

As a result of ecological imbalances and depleting forest-cover, the wild

animals come out at night in search of food in the villages and attack
human beings and domestic animals and fowls.
