The Southern South African waters were designated as a Special Area under MARPOL Annex I in 2006. This followed confirmation that adequate reception facilities for ship-generated oily wastes were available in major ports in the region. The Special Area incorporates the continental shelf from the Spoeg River mouth to east of the Great Fish River mouth, extending to the 500m depth contour, and encompasses the Agulhas Bank and southern Benguela upwelling ecosystem. Specific coordinates defining the boundaries of the Southern South African waters Special Area are also provided.
