B. Establishing a Pass the message.


Purpose for the
Lesson Each group should have 4 representatives to play the game. The
players should pass the message the teacher gave to his/her group
mates. Then one representative from the group should write the
complete message in the board. The first group to finish and have
the most accurate message will win the game.

Message: Don’t raise your voice, improve your argument.


C. Presenting
Examples/Instances of The idea of same sex marriage is one of the topics that have
the Lesson been widely debated in the United States of America. It has
often been met with strong opposition since the majority of the
country’s citizens are Christians and Christianity views the idea
as evil. On the other hand, those who believe it is right and
should be legalized have provided a number of arguments to
support it, including that it is a fundamental human right. This
debate is still ongoing even after a Supreme Court ruling
legalized this type of marriage. However, I think this debate is
unnecessary because same sex marriage, just like opposite
sex marriage, should be legal.

It has been proven through studies that same sex couples are
better at parenting. A University of Melbourne (2014) study
indicated that compared to children raised by both mother and
father, children brought up by same sex couples do better in
terms of family cohesion and overall health. Similarly, the
journal Pediatrics published a study in 2010 stating that
children under the guardianship of lesbian mothers performed
better academically and socially (Gerstmann, 2017). The
children also experienced fewer social problems. Same sex
marriages also reduce divorce rates. According to Gerstmann
(2017), the divorce rates in a state were reduced significantly
after the state legalized gay marriages. This was as per the
analysis of the before and after divorce statistics. Likewise,
higher divorce rates were recorded in states where gay
marriages are prohibited.

In contrast, opponents of same-sex marriage argue that a


relationship between same-sex couples cannot be considered
marriage since marriage is the union between a man and a
woman. Based on this traditional definition of marriage, they
contend that gay and lesbian couples should not marry.
However, as noted by Carpenter (2005), this definitional
argument shows no evidence to support it thus seriously
flawed and fallacious. It is in no way logical to challenge gay
marriage based on this old-fashioned marriage definition. That
marriage only happens when one man and one woman come
together in matrimony is a constricted view of the institution of
marriage. Moreover, there are no reasons accompanying the
definition showing that it is the right one or should be the only
one (Carpenter, 2005). Therefore, it should be expanded to
include same-sex couples. The lack of reasons to support it
makes it defenseless thus weak.

Same sex marriages should be legalized by all countries in the


world. In the U.S., the debate surrounding its legalization
should die off because it is irrelevant. Studies have shown that
children raised by same sex couples are performing better
academically and socially. Additionally, states that legalized
same sex marriage has less divorce rates than those that
prohibited it. People have the right to marry whoever they like
whether they are of the same sex or not. Just like love can
sprout between a man and a woman, so can it between a man
and a fellow man or a woman and a fellow woman. There is
absolutely no need to subject gays, lesbians, and bisexuals to
unnecessary psychological torture by illegalizing same sex
marriage.

E. Discussing New When we hear the word “argument,” we know this as a heated

people to agree with our claim using facts. This is called
argumentation. In order to do that, we need to do research and find
evidences to support our claim. This kind of writing is what we call
“argumentative essay.” An argumentative essay is a written form of
argumentation.

An argumentative essay presents evidences for a claim in order to


let the reader know why it is more favorable. It also shows why the
other side of an issue is unfavorable or less favorable. It also
includes, like any other essay, an introduction and conclusion.
An argumentative essay is a piece of writing that takes a stance on
an issue. In a good argumentative essay, a writer attempts to
persuade readers to understand and support their point of view
about an issue by stating their reasoning and providing evidence to
support it.

Argumentative Essay- It tries to change the reader’s mind by


convincing the reader to agree with the writer’s point of view.

Parts of an Argumentative Essay


1. Introduction
- A compelling and interesting first section of your paper that
talks about the issue and has an attention getting hook.
- It introduces the problem and gives the background
information needed for the argument and the thesis
statement. It contains a contextualization and a concise
explanation of the claim you are arguing for or against.
 Claim a statement or assertion that is open to
challenge and that requires support (your basic belief
about a particular topic, issue, event or idea).
 Counterclaim is the opposite of the argument or the
opposing argument.
 Thesis statement one or more sentence that expresses
the main idea of an essay. It makes a claim, directly
answering a question.

2. Body
- The body of the essay contains reasons. Each paragraph
talks about one reason. The reason is included in the topic
sentence and is supported by details or materials. These
supporting materials can be examples, statistics, personal
experiences or quotations.

 Background Information readers are informed about


the topic, the arguments being made in support of the
question about the topic and opposing arguments.
 Evidence refers to facts, documentation or testimony
used to strengthen a claim, support an argument, or
reach a conclusion.
 Reasons tell why the claim is made and it is supported
by the evidence. They support the thesis and form
argument with evidence.
 Refutation is the part of an essay that disproves the
opposing arguments. It is always necessary in a
persuasive paper to refute or answer those arguments.
3. Conclusion
- Closes the essay and tries to close the issue. The aim is to
convince the reader that your essay has covered all the most
important arguments about the issue and that your main
premise is the best position on the issue.

- The conclusion restates the main claim and gives one or two
general statements which exactly summarize the arguments
and support the main premise.
