I. Introduction (Time Frame: 15 minutes)

As a wise and healthy consumer, you want to be sure that the medicine you purchase is safe and
effective. But do you know that even safe and government-approved medicines can cause undesirable side
effects to the body when misused and abused? Misuse of medicine happens when it is taken incorrectly or not
according to prescription. Abuse of medicine, on the other hand, happens when it is taken more than what is
prescribed for or taken for purposes other than what it is intended to, such as to feel “high” or to induce
psychological effects.

Medicines and Its Classifications

Medicine is defined as a compound or preparation used for the prevention or treatment of disease
(www.oxforddictionaries.com). Most medicines are taken orally, others are applied on the skin, inhaled, taken
intravenously (injected), or inserted in the anus.

1. Over-the-counter (OTC) Medicine

Over-the-counter medicine is also known as non-prescription medicine. It is ordered and bought over the
counter of drugstores or pharmacies. One does not need to present a prescription from a doctor to buy an over-
the-counter medicine. OTC medicine is used to treat or prevent common communicable diseases and
symptoms experienced during an illness or when the body is not feeling well.
2. Prescription Medicine
Prescription medicine can be ordered and bought from drugstores and pharmacies upon presentation of
a prescription from a medical professional. Prescription medicine is more potent than over-the-counter medicine
and is dangerous when misused or abused. General information found in a prescription are:
