Student Handbook

Welcome
The staff at Gormanston Park School of English are delighted to welcome our students for our 2022
Junior Summer Centre. The school, our accommodation and sports facilities are all located on a
spectacular 100-acre campus. With extensive gardens, large forests and even our own castle, students
will find plenty of adventure during their stay with us.

Our staff are looking forward to meeting with you and ensuring that you have an enjoyable and
memorable stay with us.

Getting to the School Campus


All students should have booked return airport transfers in advance with the school.

For any students travelling without a transfer there is a number 101 bus from the airport. If you get off at
‘The Huntsman’ Pub, it is only a 5-minute walk to the campus.

Take a taxi from Dublin Airport. The journey time is approximately 25 minutes and should cost about
€35.

Arriving on the Campus


All students should report to the reception which is located close to the large water tower. Please phone
the emergency phone number if you need assistance.

Our reception staff will check you in, give you your bedroom key and answer any questions you might
have.

Check-in time is from 15:00 and check-out is at 10:30


General Campus Information and Accommodation Rules

• Electricity in Ireland is 220 V


• Firefighting notices are located in the corridors so please read them and abide by them. Fire
escape plans are located on the door of each room, please take time to read them and
familiarise yourself with the appropriate escape route for yourself.
• ‘No Entry’ signs are displayed in certain areas within the building. It is of the utmost importance
that these are obeyed in the interests of health and safety and child protection.
• Lost and found items; please report to Gormanston Park Reception.

Campus Rules
• We always expect all guests to be respectful of our staff who are here to assist you.
• We expect all guests to be considerate of other guests who may be sharing the premises.
• Smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere on the campus. This includes the smoking of e-
cigarettes.
• No alcohol is to be consumed on the premises.
• Open fires or candles are not permitted on the campus.
• We don’t accept any responsibility for personal belongings. Gormanston Park is not liable in
cases of theft or loss. Please ensure that you lock the door behind you and have the key card
with you all the time.
• Please keep in mind that other guests may want to rest and avoid making noise in your bedroom,
corridor or in the hallway after 22.00 hours. Music or loud noise is strictly prohibited after 22.00.
• Pets are not allowed onto premises.
• If an individual is responsible for damaging any Gormanston Park property, an appropriate
charge will be imposed. Group leaders have a particular responsibility for those in their charge in
this regard.
• Appropriate dress is required within shared areas of Gormanston Park (Pyjamas, bare feet and
bare chest are not acceptable)
• Do not forget to return in your keycard at the reception or in the check-out box in Dining Hall
when you are departing.
• Group leaders are responsible for the entire group while on the premises and they should be
monitoring their behaviour.
• For safety and hygiene reasons preparing of hot meals or drinks in the room is strictly prohibited.
• Mealtimes and special dietary requests will be agreed upon prior to arrival.
• During your stay, please help preserve our environment and be reasonable when using water
and electricity.
• On the day of your departure please leave the room by 10.30 hours.
• Please handle the keycard with care. If the key-card is lost or damaged during the time of your
stay we will charge €15 to replace it.
Night & Morning
• All students must be in their bedrooms and lights out by 22:30. Students must stay in their
rooms during the night.
• There is security and a night porter on duty in the accommodation area throughout the night.
• All bedrooms have individual electronic key-cards.
• There are CCTV cameras throughout all the buildings including the corridors of the
accommodation sections.
• If students need to talk with staff during the night, they can come out of their room and talk with
the night porter, who will help them.
• All students should wake up, shower and be down in the restaurant for breakfast between 07:30
and 08:00

Day 1 in the School


• The classrooms are in the same building as the restaurant and accommodation.
• After breakfast staff will direct students to their classrooms.
• Students will be met by the academic staff and directed to a classroom.
• Is students have not already completed an English level test, they will do this on the first
morning.

Dietary Requirements
Our chef has been made aware of all student dietary requirements and will prepare separate meals. It is
important that each student also informs the catering staff of their requirements each day.

Language Classes
Our Academic Manager Pat and her teaching team will test your level of English and place you in an
appropriate level.

• You will be provided with a folder, paper and a pen on your first day.
• All class materials will be provided to you by your teacher.

Activity Programme
The following is the multi-activity programmes for the 8 weeks of the summer. Management reserve the
right to alter the programmes in certain circumstances.
• English & Sports students have a different schedule of activities with sports coaching on 4
afternoons per week.
• Intensive English students have a different schedule of activities with English classes on 3
afternoons per week.

English & Celtic FC Academy


Coaching for students on this programme will take place on the soccer pitch in front of the sports hall.
Times are from 14:00-16:30, Monday to Thursday.

English & Basketball


Coaching for students on this programme will take place in the sports hall.
Times are from 14:00-16:30, Monday to Thursday.

English & Volleyball


Coaching for students on this programme will take place in the sports hall.
Times are from 14:00-16:30, Monday to Thursday.

Intensive English
English classes will take place for 2 hours from 14:30-16:30 in the same location as their morning English
class. The days are Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday.

Social Rooms on the Campus


We have 3 main social rooms available to our students on the campus.
• Each room has a TV with Netflix.
• One room has a playstation
• There are also a range of board and other games available

Towels & Toiletries


• We provide a large and small towel for every student on arrival. These are replaced midweek
and again at the weekends.
• We provide a small amount of shower gel & shampoo in the bedrooms but would suggest that
students bring additional amounts.

COVID-19
There are currently no Covid-19 restrictions in Ireland. Students are not required to wear masks or social
distance from each other.

Doctor
There is a doctor’s surgery on the campus. It is open from 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday.
Shop
• There are a few vending machines on the campus for students to purchase sweets, crisps and
drinks.
• There is also a small shop selling the same items that will be open from 16:30 to 17:30 each day.
• Students can use cash or cards for purchasing items in the shop and vending machines.
• There are water fountains beside the classrooms where students can get drinking water and fill
water bottles.
