Basic And Basics of First aid

Have you ever seen a building construction

site?
Can you describe what workers are wearing
when in the construction premises?

What do you think is the benefit of wearing

proper uniform and protective gears?
First Aid is defined by the evaluations and
actions done by a bystander or a victim with
minimal or no medical equipment.

First aid is all about helping others.

Knowledge of first aid can save lives.
However, prevention of injury through
practice of safety is an equally important
concept

• Daily practice of safety prevents the loss of

life.
• Unplanned medical and property costs.
• Decrease of quality of life through
decreased mobility.
Safety at Home
Organizing and careful planning at home can
prevent accidents.

Bathroom are common areas

of slips and falls.
• Rubber mats may be installed to reduce the
slipperiness of the floor.
• Soaps and other toiletries must be within range
to prevent them from causing accidents when
someone tries to reach for them.
• Handrails may be installed near the toilet or
shower.
• Electrical equipment such as dryers and curling
irons must be stored in a dry place to avoid
short circuit and electrocution .
• Bathroom will have medicine cabinets but
these should not be readily accessible to the
children who might ingest the medicines by
accident .
Kitchen is a potentially dangerous place
where fires and burns can happen.
When cooking
• Never leave the cooking food attended
• Wear an apron to protect yourself from hot food
or oil splatter.
• Always use heat-resistant mittens or pot holders
when handling hot items to prevent burns.
• Keep sharp objects away from the reach of
children to prevent cuts.
• Use a stable ladder instead of a chair or a table, if
you need to reach something from the top of a
shelf
When cooking

• Cleaning agents that are that are highly

flammable, such as thinners, must be stored away
from fire sources.
After cooking
• Make sure that all electrical appliances are
unplugged from the electricity outlets
• The valve of LPG cylinder is closed to prevent
fires.
Smoke detectors are common in the homes
of other but not a regular feature of most
houses in the Philippines.

Play room

• Toys bring joy to children but they can

cause harm when not stored properly.
• Put toys in boxes where children can
readily access them without the need to
climb
• Children must be instructed to return their
toys in their boxes.

Toys on stairs and hallways can cause slips and

falls. Because children are always inquisitive,
safety plug must be installed for electricity
outlets that may be reached by them.
Safety at School

Safety at school is important because students

spend a considerable amount of their day time
there.
• Running on hallways and on stairs can lead
to falls, therefore vigorous activities and
such should be reserved for safer areas
like playground.
• Cramped staircases can also lead to
accidents so it is best to fall in line and to
keep right when using the stairs.
In Classroom
• Bags must be stored appropriately under
the table and not on the aisle to prevent
someone from tripping
• Sharp objects, such scissors and cutting
tools, must be carefully kept to avoid cuts
proper attire must be worn when doing
specific activities
• P.E. uniforms must be worn during sports
activities and laboratory gowns during
laboratory activities.
Safety at Work
Safety at Work
Why injuries happen at work?

Injuries happen at work because disregard

safety rules.
• Hard hats and protective shoes must be
worn in construction sites.

• Chemicals must be properly labeled and

stored.
• Smoking near flammable substances must
be avoided to prevent fire.

• Gloves must always be worn when

handling toxic or infectious substances
such as body secretions and blood.

• Needles and other sharp objects used in

healthcare must be properly discarded in
puncture-proof containers.
Safety on the Road
Safety on the Road
Vehicular accidents can cause loss of property
and lives. Road safety is of utmost
importance since many people can be hurt all
at once with road mishaps.
• Seatbelts must always be worn when
inside the car, regardless if the car is
moving very slowly.
Safety on the Road
• Answering calls and sending text messages
must be avoided at all times when driving
so that the driver’s focus is on the road.
• Road signs should be strictly followed.
• A yellow light means to slow down, not
speed up.
• Pedestrians must cross the street through
pedestrian lanes and overpasses or
underpasses to avoid being hit by vehicles.
Safety on the Road
• Helmets must be worn when riding
motorcycles.
• Motorcycles can accommodate a
maximum of two person only and it is
unsafe for parents to carry their children
while riding motorcycles.
• When entering a train, stay at the side of
the opening doors and wait for the other
passenger exit
Safety on the Road

• Move to the middle of the train and avoid

blocking the doors when your destination
is still far away.
Sum Up!

• An important part of learning first aid is

understanding the concept of safety.
Practice safety wherever you go to prevent
injuries at home, at school, at work, and
on the road.
Let’s Appreciate!

 Safety and first aid are two concepts that

go hand in hand. Remember to practice
safety wherever you go to prevent injuries.

“Safety is more important than convenience.”
