Research and provide a brief description of the following

1. Properties of packaging material (25 pts)

❖ Extra Strong - Co-extruded polyethylene film with a thickness range of 60

microns to 100 microns is used to create plastic packaging materials with a thick
seal or solid flat seal at the boundaries of assets to reinforce and boost their
protection.
❖ Tensile Strength - A mechanical test called a tensile strength test is done on
packing materials to find out how much force can be applied to it before it breaks
or ruptures. It is essentially a "pulling" test that assesses the durability of paper,
board, and plastics.
❖ Bursting Strength - The strength of a substance is measured in pounds per
square inch as its burst strength. The quality of cold chain packing may be
evaluated using burst strength. Burst strength, often known as the Mullen Burst
Test, is a measurement used in the packaging industry to determine how much
force is necessary to rupture corrugated boxes and flexible packaging.
❖ Tear Resistance - One of the crucial mechanical characteristics of rubber goods
is the tear strength, which is used to describe the tear resistance. It is the amount
of force required to rip through a material and cause the fracture to spread
outward until it breaks.
❖ Puncture Resistance - When using films as packaging material, such as for food
or items with sharp edges, puncture resistance is crucial.
❖ Impact Strength - Impact testing measures the "toughness" of packing in
situations when there is quick deformation, like when a box is dropped or
something is dropped.
❖ Moisture Resistant - Plastic packing materials are made of polyethylene, which
resists moisture and prevents outside moisture from entering the home, ensuring
it is safe and secure from outside conditions.
❖ Tear Strength - The force necessary to rend a plastic film is known as the tear
strength. Stretch film and other polymers are frequently tested for tear resistance.
The most popular method for determining the tear strength is the Elmendorf test.
❖ Recyclable - As environmental awareness and concern grow, we provide plastic
packaging materials of the best thickness and quality, which are readily
recyclable and reusable to create various types of packaging or other materials.
❖ Writable Surface - The plastic packaging materials used to attach the package
address are designed to provide a smooth writing surface that is easy to write on
with a ballpoint pen or permanent marker for labeling purposes.
❖ Light Weight - Should produce plastic bags and envelopes that are lightweight
while maintaining strength to make it easier to carry.

2. Types of Paper and Paper based Packaging Materials (25pts)

❖ Corrugated boxes - Corrugated boxes are used to carry heavier products
such as appliances, electronic goods, wine, fruit and vegetables. They
are made of several layers of paper fiber, with linerboard and a middle
layer called corrugating medium. The wavy, ripple-like shape of the
medium in the middle gives the box its strength. Corrugated board can
also be used to make bulk bins, partitions, furniture, pallets, gypsum
wallboard, insulation, and even a bicycle.
❖ Boxboard or Paperboard Cartons - Boxboard is a thin, lighter weight
carton used to carry single items such as breakfast cereal, shoes,
crackers, and toys. It does not have a wavy middle layer to add box
strength, and has non-packaging uses such as cores and tubes, graphic
board, partitions, and displays.
❖ Paper Bags and Sacks - These may essentially be separated into two
categories: the paper bags used for carrying groceries and/or retail
products, and the multiwall sacks used for the collecting of organics,
leaves, and yard trash (food scraps).
❖ Waxed Paper - Wax paper is used to make food products more durable
and moisture resistant. This prevents moisture from soaking through the
paper, allowing for a greasy burger or unwrapping a taffy without sticking
to the wrapper.
❖ CFB - Corrugated Fiber Board (CFB) is a sandwich construction made of
a sine wave-shaped core and flutes of corrugated material, together with
numerous paperboard materials and linerboard. CFB packaging is a
flexible, practical, cost-effective, lightweight, durable, recyclable, and
dynamic type of packaging.
❖ Chipboard - In the packaging world, chipboard can be formed into a
variety of end-uses, including: Pallet sheets and push-pull
sheets. Pallet pads. Edge protectors.
